Many people consider Emmy nominee Anya Taylor-Joy to be one of the most beautiful actors in the entertainment industry. However, she begs to differ. In a previous interview, The Queen’s Gambit star confessed that she doesn’t think of herself as beautiful, sharing that she considered herself “weird-looking” more than anything else in past years.
Anya Taylor-Joy doesn’t think she meets Hollywood’s beauty standards for the big screen
Despite landing a modeling career at the age of 17 and going on to become one of the most sought-after actors in the industry, Anya Taylor-Joy has had a hard time believing that she’s “beautiful.”
While speaking with The Sun in November 2020, The Queen’s Gambit star shared that she’s never thought of herself as good-looking, noting that she doesn’t meet Hollywood’s so-called beauty standards required for the big screen.
“I have never and I don’t think I will ever think of myself as beautiful,” Taylor-Joy told the outlet. “I don’t think I’m beautiful enough to be in films. It sounds pathetic and my boyfriend warns me people will think I’m an absolute d— for saying these things, but I just think I’m weird-looking.”
The Peaky Blinders actor continued, “I won’t go to the cinema to watch my own film, I’ll watch it before. The beauty of being in your own skin is that you don’t have to look at your own face.”
The actor considered herself ‘the first ugly Emma’
Anya Taylor-Joy has starred in plenty of films since kicking off her acting career in the mid-2010s. But despite her many acting roles over the years, there’s one that took a significant toll on the actor’s mental health — and it just so happened to be the one she’s most known for.
During her interview with The Sun, Taylor-Joy revealed she “had a panic attack” while filming the 2020 period comedy-drama Emma, sharing that her opinions on how she looked in the movie got the best of her.
“I genuinely had a panic attack on Emma,” she recalled. “I thought, ‘I am the first ugly Emma and I can’t do this,’ because the first line in the movie is, ‘I’m handsome, clever, and rich.’”
Anya Taylor-Joy has learned to accept that people see her as a beauty
Seeing as she’s had a hard time believing that she’s beautiful, Anya Taylor-Joy would often retreat into her shell when people paid her a compliment. However, in recent years, the actor has learned to accept the praise and admiration that comes her way, all while trying her best to the forgo negative comments she has about her appearance.
“I find that when someone compliments me I make myself smaller and my voice goes higher,” she previously told Stylist magazine. “People are not really sure how to take compliments and I think it’s important.”
Though she would often speak negatively about her looks, Taylor-Joy has discovered that doing so can greatly affect your life and now tries her best not to talk down about her appearance as much.
“That negative self-talk and negative self-image have a real impact on how you live your life,” she continued.”I think it’s important to spend time analyzing the way you speak to yourself, and why.”
Despite her insecurities, Taylor-Joy has learned to accept that people think of her as beautiful even if she disagrees.
“I have made it a practice in my life to not turn down compliments,” she told The Sun. “If somebody says I look pretty today, I just say thank you.”
