A travel expert has revealed the unexpected way to get the best discount for trips over the Christmas period.

Maya Reynolds, from Faye Travel Insurance, took to TikTok to share the light-hearted clip.

She said that plane passengers who ‘love a thrill’ should try booking last minute to save as much as 20 per cent on flights.

In the clip, which was posted last month, Maya uses a green screen to talk viewers through the ins and outs of festive travel.

She begins: ‘Am I the only one just finding out that booking your travels last minute can actually be cheaper than booking way in advance? Because that is definitely good to know.

‘Nearly 70 per cent of us are planning to travel this holiday season so let’s talk about some good tricks to keep in mind.’

Maya continues: ‘They say the early bird gets the worm but people have reported saving up to 20 per cent when booking flights the day of.

‘It’s definitely a gamble but if you love a thrill this hack might be for you.

‘The cheapest days to fly are usually Tuesdays and Wednesdays but even cheaper than that is flying on actual holidays – and it’s pretty cool to say that you were flying at the same time as Santa.’

But the content creator does not stop there as she adds a whole host of other tips: ‘Save space in your luggage by wearing your bulkiest holiday sweater on the flight.

‘Not only will you be the most stylish passenger, you’re also not going to have to pay for extra luggage.

Maya went on to note that, while you may want to ‘thrill’ seek by booking last minute, you should always opt to insure your trip in order to protect yourself amid any delays or weather issues.  

‘And there’s nothing that will keep the holiday spirit alive quite like insuring your travels,’ she said.

‘You can’t predict flight patterns and delays and snowstorms – but you can make sure to have somebody by your side and on your side no matter what.’

For Maya’s final tip, she concludes: ‘You might want to join your airline loyalty program. Not just for the free peanuts but for the chance to become a premier holiday traveler.
