After a surprise court filing Thursday, Jamie Spears appears to be out as conservator of the Britney Spears fortune. But what’s next? It turns out that Britney has already requested somebody to replace her father.
Britney Spears has already stated her preference
On July 26th, according to Page Six, Britney’s new lawyer Mathew Rosengart filed a request to have Jamie Spears removed as Britney’s conservator — without assigning blame.
“There might well come a time when the Court will be called upon to consider whether the conservatorship should be terminated in its entirety and whether — in addition to stripping his daughter of her dignity, autonomy, and certain fundamental liberties — Mr. Spears is also guilty of misfeasance or malfeasance warranting the imposition of surcharges, damages, or other legal action against him,” read Rosengart’s filing.
“Nevertheless, although our investigation into these issues and others is active and ongoing, this Petition does not ask the Court to address such issues today. Instead, this Petition asks the Court to take the initial narrow step, within its broad discretion, of removing Mr. Spears as conservator on grounds that do not even require Mr. Spears to be at, or admit to, fault.”
Rosengart, who was hand-picked by Britney to be her lawyer earlier this summer, suggested in the filing that the ability to choose her lawyer should also indicate that she “likewise has sufficient capacity to make this nomination.”
An additional request to suspend Jamie Spears ‘immediately’ from the conservatorship was filed in early August.
In Mr. Spears’ place, the documents suggested that Los Angeles certified public accountant Jason Rubin take over Jamie Spears’ lucrative position. If Britney has her way, Rubin will oversee Britney’s finances and healthcare going forward.
It appears that for now, Mr. Spears is still in control over the estate pending a judge’s approval of the change, pending any response from the courts.
Here’s what we know about Britney Spears’ choice for conservator
According to Newsweek, Rubin heads up Certified Strategies, Inc., in Woodland Hills, California. His website claims he is exceptionally experienced in forensic accounting, with work going back to 1993. More importantly, Rubin has experience in conservatorship cases, per his LinkedIn profile.
“As California Licensed Professional Fiduciaries, we have substantial experience in trust administration, conservatorships and probate estates. We have been entrusted to administer over $250 million of assets,” Rubin wrote via LinkedIn. He also sports a Bachelor’s degree in accounting from California State University in Northridge.
Rubin’s responsibilities would include career opportunities
Rubin would indeed be taking over for Britney’s embattled father. But he’d also be filling a hole left by wealth management firm Bessemer Trust, which resigned as co-conservator back in early July as the legal arrangement began to crumble publically.
Per Rosengart and Britney Spears’ July 26th filing, Rubin would have control over career opportunities as well as finances.
Specifically, “the power and authorization to pursue opportunities related to professional commitments and activities including but not limited to performing, recording, videos, tours, TV shows, and other similar activities as long as they are approved by the conservator of the person, the conservatee’s medical team.”
Nobody has officially been appointed as yet. But it’s worth noting that Jamie Spears has collected $16,000 per month for controlling his daughter’s nearly $60 million estate under the existing conservatorship. He also negotiated a percentage of her Piece of Me Las Vegas residency. All told, he has collected roughly $5 million from his daughter’s estate.
