If you haven’t already binge-watched all of Bridgerton season two, what were you doing with your weekend? If you have, you’ll likely have spotted a bonding moment in episode three between Kate Sharma and her younger sister Edwina Sharma.
The duo (played by actresses Simone Ashley and Charithra Chandran) discuss Edwina’s love-life woes while Kate can be seen brushing oil through her sister’s hair, in a technique known as oiling. The scene gives a respectful nod to the South Asian hair tradition, which is typically done weekly to promote a healthy scalp and strong, shiny hair.
If you haven’t heard of hair oiling and would like to know a bit more about it, hair oil brand ByErim’s founder Erim Kaur explains the process…
“Hair oiling has a long history as part of South Asian culture, and is often used as an intergenerational bonding beauty treatment between female family members,” she explains. “It’s a weekly beauty ritual which myself and many other families partake in, and to see it on screen in a huge Netflix drama is excellent.
“The series presented hair oiling in the right way: an indulgent hair treatment, but also as a way for family members to bond as an act of self-care. In recent years, we’ve really seen the popularity of hair oiling grow outside of the South Asian community with many people seeing the benefits hair oiling can bring to the health, growth and condition of their hair.”
How is hair oiling done?
Quite simply, oil is poured onto hair and massaged into the scalp. The treatment is then left on overnight, protected from getting on pillows with the help of a hair towel or hair cap, and washed off with shampoo and conditioner the following morning.
Are there any other benefits to the practice?
Some beauty experts claim that hair oiling can help prevent hair loss, but at the very least, the process of massaging the scalp with the oil can help to exfoliate and increase blood circulation, which has been shown to aid healthy hair growth.
The oil itself can also help to reinforce and strengthen the hair shaft, making lengths look more straight and healthy.
What oils should be used?
Erim recommends her own ByErim Hair Oil, £25 here for 50ml, as the perfect product.
“My hair oil is the perfect blend of six essential oils that strengthen hair, boost shine and leave the scalp hydrated. The formula blends argan oil, rich in nutrients, and coconut oil, known for its antibacterial and antifungal action as well as high protein content,” says Erim.
Other common oils used are coconut, sesame, almond, argan and moringa, which can be shopped in concentrated forms from many health shops.
It is, however, recommended that you do a patch test before using an oil on your hair and scalp, to avoid any risk of allergic reaction.
