Wallace and Gromit 50p coin: how much is it worth?

FAMOUS cheese-loving duo Wallace and Gromit first hit TV screens in 1989 and were commemorated on a 50p coin 30 years later.

Collectors and fans of the show alike may be looking to get their hands on this 50p piece – meaning you could make a small fortune.

The inseparable duo first appeared in the film A Grand Day Out by Nick Park in 1989.

Since then, they starred in three 30 minute specials and another feature film – becoming British pop culture icons known internationally.

And 30 years on in 2019, The Royal Mint partnered with Aardman Animations to produce a coin in celebration of the pair.

The 50p features a design by Nick Park himself – the creator of Wallace and Gromit.

The reverse shows Wallace, a wacky inventor, and Gromit, his lovable best friend and pet, both peering through the window of a rocket built to take them into space, taken from the plot of the first movie.

Above the portrait of the two British-loved characters are the words Caseus Praestans, meaning "cracking cheese" in Latin.

This 2019 commemorative piece marked the first time the pair had ever featured on a UK coin.

But it never entered into circulation, meaning you won't have found any in your spare change, and you can't spend it anywhere either.

How much is it worth?

Originally, collectors or fans of the duo could buy the Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) 50p coin from The Royal Mint's website for £10.

But the coin is no longer available to purchase on there.

Though people can still buy the Silver Proof version for £65 from The Royal Mint, and only 25,000 of these are available.

For collectors serious about coinage condition, 630 gold proof editions were created, but for over £1,000.

Some who bought the BU piece back in 2019 have taken to eBay to make a small profit.

We found one that caught the eye of three bidders and sold for £15, meaning the seller would have made a £5 profit after purchasing the original coin for a tenner.

But note that bidders can pullout of sales, meaning an item hasn't sold the the amount it says it has.

Generally speaking, a coin is only worth what someone is willing to bid for it – so it can change from one day to the next.

Keep a lookout for fakes on eBay, and check out similar listings online to give you an idea of how much others are willing to bid for the item.

We reveal the rarest 50p coins in circulation, and some can fetch up to £721.
