Thousands of Brits due free £50 cash in cold weather payments in bank accounts

    Thousands of eligible households are due free money with the cash paid into their accounts within 14 days.

    The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) hands out the cash to certain households struggling this winter.

    It's made in locations where residents experience continuous below-zero weather.

    Households can get £25 during each seven-day period of low temperatures from now until March 31.

    The DWP confirmed cold weather payments had been triggered at over 800 postcodes over the last three weeks.

    It's made automatically, including to those on Universal Credit.

    Households are eligible for the extra cash if they get the following:

    • Pension Credit
    • Universal Credit
    • Income Support
    • income-based jobseeker’s allowance
    • income-related employment and support allowance
    • Support for mortgage interest

    Depending on your specific circumstances, you may also need to meet one or more of the following additional criteria:

    • Have a disability or be in receipt of pension premium
    • Have a child who is disabled
    • Be in receipt of child tax credit that includes a disability or severe disability element
    • Have a severe or enhanced disability premium
    • Be in receipt of a limited capability for work amount
    • Have a child under five living with you
