Look, no one’s saying it’s ground-breaking. But a classic is a classic for a reason, and it’s a simple fact that wearing head-to-toe white is one of the most elegant ways to waft through summer.

It screams power and control, not least because it takes some power and control to keep it clean and pristine.

Sure, there’s a time and a place for bold, cheery, summery prints. I’m a real magpie when it comes to getting dressed, but when I want to switch up a gear and feel just that bit more grown-up and chic, I’ll pull out something in brilliant, bright white. And it looks like Queen Camilla does, too.

She stole the show at Wimbledon last week in a stunning white midi-dress, topping my personal best-dressed list from the tournament, along with another in top-to-toe white — Amanda Holden.

Whether you’re actual royalty, or TV royalty like Amanda, white outfits always look classy and expensive.

Add some well-considered hints of delicate jewellery, maybe some huge sunglasses, and you’ve nailed the whole ‘coastal grandmother’ vibe.

That’s the cheeky TikTok term for the neutral tones said to be favoured by rich American ladies with lovely beach houses in the Hamptons.

The 2023 spin on white, however, is choosing looks that will work for you long after you’re back from the beach.

So many of the more structured looks from the High Street translate that easy chic aesthetic to the office.

The subtly-patterned co-ord from Ghost (above, far left) would look brilliant for work paired with a classic blazer. While Me+Em’s midi (third from left) is the perfect versatile piece to see you through everything from a Sunday barbecue to a board presentation.

But whatever you choose, you can relax in the knowledge that it’s near impossible to get it wrong.

Keep it interesting (and less ‘cult leader’ vibes) by mixing up your fabrics and textures. And maybe give the red wine a swerve until you’re safely back in your autumnal blacks.
