Slash the cost of tasty takeaways by using our top money-saving tips

WEEKLY takeaways can be a well-deserved treat, but they also blow a hole in the budget.

People spend an average of £641 a year ordering food, according to accounting firm KPMG.

But you can slash that spend with some small tweaks . . .

BE SURPRISED: Mobile app Too Good To Go offers “magic bags” of leftover food from restaurants. You won’t know what’s included until you collect. A bag of hot food can cost £3 to £4. The Karma app is similar, but you know what you’re getting beforehand.

SAVE: £30 on an average weekly takeaway for four

SUPERMARKET SWITCH: Get your favourite takeaway — Indian, Chinese or Pizza — while doing your weekly food shop. It’s still a nice tickle for the taste buds, but lighter on spending. Morrisons offers a fish & chip takeaway service for £5.50. It’s £3 for a child’s portion, with a portion of fruit and drink included. Tesco’s Chinese takeaway meal box costs £7.50 and includes chicken and black bean, sweet and sour chicken, crispy vegetable spring rolls and prawn crackers.

SAVE: Around £35 (with two takeaway meal boxes)

MAKE YOUR OWN: Slightly more effort, but definitely cheaper. The Spice Tailor sauce and spice kits make it easy and include Tikka Masala and Keralan Coconut. They’re £2.95 from Sainsbury’s and Tesco — just add meat or veg. Or try the Fried Chicken Bundle from Iceland — you just pop it in the oven. A main, side and drink for the family starts at around £6.

SAVE: £44 with the fried chicken bundle

HUNT A DEAL: Sign up to takeaway delivery companies such as Just Eat, Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Foodhub. Then check weekly for any tempting offers. Deals such as ten or 20 per cent off your spend are typical.

SAVE: Up to £10 on average family spend
