A YouTuber, who makes money posting content about luxury clothes and reviewing accessories that cost thousands, has hit out at people who think influencers are unintelligent.
Cassie Thorpe, 28, who lives in London, managed to double what she earned in her previous corporate job posting on Youtube and Instagram within one year.
The fashion-lover, who’s bio says “I love to spend money on ridiculous things”, now has over 28,000 Instagram followers, @casscass2102, and 74,300 YouTube followers, @CassieThorpe.
And, she thinks that the public should respect influencers more as her career takes a lot of time and effort.
Unfortunately, she’s come across many people who insult her for her role and say that influencers are “unintelligent” and “shallow”.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Cassie said: “I think people only see the outcome of being an 'influencer'; they look at photos on Instagram and YouTube videos without considering the time, effort and research that goes into creating that content – nor do they see the business know-how required to negotiate contracts and deals with brands.
“People's perceptions of influencers also depend heavily on their niches – mine is luxury fashion and, generally, anything fashion or beauty related.
“As a result, people categorise me as 'materialistic' or 'vain', assuming you only need two brain cells to do what I do.”
She added: “When I meet people and introduce myself as a YouTuber, it generally garners a quizzical look.
“Then, when they learn more about the corporate job I had previously and the fact that I have an economics degree, they're always surprised and wonder why a 'smart girl' would be doing this job. It's disappointing.”
Cassie achieved a 2:1 in economics from the University of Birmingham, but doesn’t think she should have to prove that she has intelligence.
She added: “I shouldn't have to prove my intelligence, I think you have to be smart to be able to make a living from sharing your experience and opinions over the internet… in my mind, that's an impressive feat that speaks for itself.
“Also, there's no correct way of measuring 'intelligence'; you don't need a degree or to have achieved anything specific – no one should have to justify their own capabilities.”
And, Cassie has received worse comments than that.

She explained: “People assuming I'm unintelligent generally is hurtful – I take great pride in all that I've achieved.
“The worst comment that I've ever received however was a racist comment someone made about my mother (who is half black), simply because I said I didn't like a specific bag in one of my videos.
“I’ve also been told I'm possessed, that I look like I'm on drugs, that I'm tacky, a spoiled brat… it's endless and is entirely misguided.”
Despite the hate, Cassie loves her self-grown career as she always wanted to work in fashion, but a negative internship put her off taking a traditional route into design or magazines.
She explained: “Being a luxury fashion influencer became my way of still being involved in the industry but on my own terms, talking about the pieces/things I wanted to discuss.
“I get to talk about the things I love with amazing people from all over the world who share my passion for luxury fashion. It really is incredible.”
Cassie, who also has a TikTok account with over a million likes, gave us a run down of her busy life as an influencer.
A week in the life of an influencer:
Mondays
Cassie said: “I’m very strict with my work schedule. On Mondays and Tuesdays I create content for all of my social media platforms; I get ready, choose my outfits and set up my room to film – including the right lighting and backdrops.
“I usually film two YouTube videos and 4 TikTok videos, then I upload the content onto my laptop and start editing.”
Tuesdays and Thursdays
The influencer commented: “On Tuesdays and Thursdays I edit my YouTube videos; this can take anywhere from 3-7 hours per video, depending on the content.”
Wednesday
Cassie said: “On Wednesdays I plan my videos for the following week. I will research what people are searching for within the realms of luxury fashion, read trending articles, learn about which items/collections are coming out soon and then decide on the topics I want to discuss.
“I don't script my videos but I will note down specific information and prices that need to be included. I will also research the SEO and metadata for each video.”
Weekends
Cassie prefers to keep weekends free, but is always researching and planning.
She added: “I also check and respond to my emails, Instagram DMs, YouTube comments and TikTok posts everyday.
“I try to keep to a 9am-5pm schedule but it's hard to stick to that when you run your own business, whether that's as an influencer or not – it's difficult to switch off and say 'ok, I'm done for the day.’”
