‘My cocaine-addicted husband left me for his counsellor after I got him help’

A mum who found help for her cocaine addicted hubby was left devastated after he left her for his counsellor.

Jemima Gerrard, 38, was so concerned when she learned her husband Jamie Beard had a £450-a-week cocaine habit, she tracked down a charity to help.

She came across Recovery Steps, which support to people who want to make a change to their alcohol and drug use.

But after just a few weeks of session Jemima was stunned when Jamie, 37, left her for his drug adviser.

She said: “I was just gutted. I went to Recovery Steps to save my marriage, but in the end, it destroyed it.”

Jemima, who had three kids from a previous relationship, met Jamie in 2015 and married in 2018, the same year they had a baby, Eliza, together.

But their “idyllic life” took a turn when she discovered his drug habit.

She said: “I knew Jamie would take cocaine recreationally on the occasional night out, but over Christmas time 2021, I began to wonder if he had a problem.

“We’d been out for a lovely dinner and afterwards we went for a walk round the grounds of a stately home. It was cold, so I pulled Jamie’s coat on.

“I stuffed my hands in his pockets and found three empty bags of drugs. Jamie claimed they were someone else’s, but alarm bells rang.”

“When I discovered he was blowing around £450 a week on the stuff, I was floored.”

She added: “Jamie collects Adidas trainers but when a couple of drug dealers turned up at the door and he was forced to sell his car to cover a debt, I knew he wasn’t spending the cash on shoes.

“I was really worried. This was no occasional drug use, he was living on them. When he told me he’d take them before going to work, I knew he needed help.”

Jemima researched rehab units online in January 2022.

She said: “That’s when I came across Recovery Steps. They did a phone assessment with Jamie before he was accepted as a patient and I drove him to his weekly sessions with a counsellor.

“I’d sit outside in the car and watch Jamie go into the building until he came out later with his homework. I wanted to make sure he was getting the help he so desperately needed.

“I wasn’t taking any chances. I wanted to do everything I could to help. Once, Jamie told me that his counsellor, Kate, had commented on how lucky he was to have such a supportive wife.

“And it was true, I supported him completely. I loved him and I wanted to save him – and our marriage.”

Jemima, from Barnsley, thought it was a bit odd when Kate began texting Jamie at home, but he dismissed it as normal.

A few months later Jamie left without a trace and she found out from a friend that he had moved in with his counsellor.

The drug adviser has since been dismissed from her role.

Jemima said: “It’s right that she’s lost her job but to be honest, it’s little comfort. Jamie and her are now expecting a new baby.

“It’s hard not to feel betrayed. She’s stolen my life.

“I went to a counsellor to save my marriage but in the end, it destroyed it.”
