After multiple delays, Jonathan Majors’ misdemeanor assault case has its next key hearing set for Oct. 25 in New York.
During a Friday hearing, Judge Michael Gaffey decided on the Oct. 25 date after hearing from Priya Chaudhry and Seth Zuckermann, Majors’ attorneys, and the Manhattan District Attorney’s office. On Sept. 12, Majors’ team had filed a motion to dismiss the case, to which the D.A.’s office must respond by Oct. 6. The defense then must reply by Oct. 13. The judge confirmed that Majors can appear virtually at the next hearing, but he must attend in-person once the trial begins.
Majors, who appeared virtually Friday, faces misdemeanor charges of harassment and assault after he was arrested in New York on March 25. His former partner Grace Jabbari accused him of assaulting her while they were traveling in a taxi back to his Manhattan apartment. Police responded to a 911 call and noted that Jabbari had minor injuries to her head and neck. Majors was arrested and later released that same day. He has denied the allegations.
Majors’ attorney, Priya Chaudhry, has alleged that Jabbari actually assaulted Majors during the incident and that the case is a “witch hunt” and “saturated with explicit and implicit bias” against Majors.
The trial was originally intended to begin Aug. 3, but was rescheduled to Sept. 6 because the prosecutors were still in the process of obtaining discovery. On Sept. 6, the prosecution said it was ready for a trial, but attorneys for Majors found issues with the certificate of compliance. A new hearing for Sept. 15 was set.
Majors is slated to appear in Marvel Studios’ “Loki” Season 2, which debuts on Disney+ on Oct. 6. He reprises his role as an alternate version of the time-hopping villain Kang the Conqueror, after he appeared as the main antagonist of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” He’s tipped to have a major role in Marvel Studios’ upcoming slate, which includes “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.” Majors also has a star role in bodybuilding drama “Magazine Dreams,” which was acquired by Searchlight after its Sundance Festival premiere. It’s set to be released Dec. 8.
