TRYING to make ends meet in January can be tough – and even more so when you have a family to feed.

Cass said: “Saving money doesn’t have to mean doing without the things you and your family enjoy.
“Just a bit of common sense and some careful planning can free up money to repay debts, save for a rainy day or buy things you didn’t think you could afford.”
Here she offers her tips:
- Plan your meals: This is a great way to save cash, especially when you’re feeding a hungry family. Spend a few minutes before you go shopping writing a meal plan for the coming week, write a shopping list and when you shop, make sure that you stick to the list. You can see the savings the day you start.
- Cancel unnecessary subscriptions: Older kids’ interests change quickly so ditch what they don’t use, such as magazine subscriptions, gaming memberships or beauty box subscriptions.
- Make sure you’re on the best phone contract: Smaller brands such as Giff Gaff have deals with plenty of data for £15 and under and even tell you when you can downgrade your package if you’re not using all you’re paying for. Check if your current provider will match or beat it
- Keep an emergency fund: Put aside at least one month’s wage as a safety net. Set up a separate bank account and put spare cash in whenever you can.
- Put cash aside for Christmas and birthdays: They happen the same time every year so there’s no excuse not to be ready. Save a little each week and buy what you can during the year.
