From July 19, the wearing of face coverings in public will no longer be legally enforced. However, in recent days ministers have made it clear people will still need to wear face coverings in indoor public places or crowded areas.
Sainsbury’s
Sainsbury’s has announced it will encourage people to wear a face covering in-store from July 19.
Staff will also be encouraged to wear a mask unless they are behind a screen.
Chief Executive Simon Roberts said: “Our colleagues’ safety is vital and many of our colleagues would feel more comfortable if those who can wear face coverings continue to wear them.
“We’ve listened closely to our customers too and they are telling us the same.”
Tesco
Tesco will be encouraging staff and customers to be “on the safe side” and wear a face covering while shopping at Tesco stores.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “Since the start of the pandemic, we have focused on ensuring everyone can get the food they need in a safe environment.
“Having listened to our customers and colleagues, we will continue to have safety measures in place in our stores; these include limiting the number of people in-store at any time, protective screens at every checkout, hand sanitiser stations and regular cleaning.
“We’re asking our customers and colleagues to be on the safe side, and so from 19 July we’ll be encouraging our colleagues to wear face coverings whilst they work and encouraging our customers to do the same when they shop with us.”
Asda
Signage and radio will encourage customers to wear face coverings when shopping in Asda stores.
An Asda spokesperson said: “We encourage customers to be respectful to each other and to follow the Government guidance on face coverings when shopping in our stores after July 19.”
According to Gloucestershire Live, Asda will also provide face coverings at the front of its stores for people who may wish to wear one but have not brought their own.
Morrisons
As per WalesOnline, Morrisons said in a statement: “In England, while face coverings will no longer be a legal requirement, guidance encourages everyone to wear one in crowded areas.
“We will encourage all customers and colleagues to follow this guidance in-store, to maintain social distancing and to exercise their own judgment.
“We will also continue to offer a free face-covering to any customer or colleague who may have forgotten theirs.”

Lidl
Lidl said customers will still be reminded to wear a face-covering in indoor spaces through signage in the store.
A Lidl spokesperson said: “We have followed Government advice throughout the pandemic and are continuing to do so as we enter this next phase over the summer.
“Following confirmation from the Prime Minister that the vast majority of restrictions will indeed be lifted from July 19 in England, we will begin reviewing our current COVID-19 secure measures in-store.
“Although no longer legally required, the Government recommends that people continue to wear face coverings in crowded or indoor spaces and we will have signage in place at store entrances reminding our customers of this.”
Aldi
Aldi will also “encourage” customers to wear face coverings when they visit Aldi stores from July 19.
An Aldi spokesperson said: “From Monday, July 19, we’ll continue to encourage customers and colleagues to wear face coverings when they’re in store.
“Other measures like hand sanitiser and screens will also stay in place.
“Face masks are still required for customers and colleagues in our Welsh and Scottish stores, in line with the latest guidance.”
Waitrose
Waitrose said they “recommend” customers and staff wear face coverings in-store, but acknowledged the decision is up to “each individual to take”.
A spokesman for the John Lewis Partnership, the parent company of both Waitrose and John Lewis, said: “In line with Government guidance, we will recommend that our customers and partners in England continue to wear a face-covering, unless exempt, from July 19.
“The decision over whether to do so or not, when in our shops, will be for each individual to take, based on their own judgment.
“Across all of our stores, we will be retaining perspex screens and hand sanitising stations.
“We will also maintain all of the hand hygiene and store cleaning disciplines which have served us well since the start of the pandemic.”
