Did Tom Daley break Buckingham Palace rules with cheeky selfies?

Did Tom Daley break palace rules? Olympic gold medallist’s cheeky selfies in a Buckingham Palace reception room and loo appear to flout ban on visitors taking photos inside

  • Olympic gold medallist attended a reception at the Palace on Wednesday night
  • Tom, 28, took selfies with fellow divers Matthew Lee and Jack Laugher
  • It is technically prohibited for guests to take photos inside Palace’s state rooms

Tom Daley may have broken protocol with a few cheeky selfies he took during a reception hosted by the King and Queen Consort for Olympians and Paralympians.

The reception, held on Buckingham Palace on Wednesday night, hosted around 200 Team GB medallists from the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics 2020 and the Beijing Winter Games 2022.

But Tom’s sneaky snaps, which he posed for with fellow divers Matthew Lee and Jack Laugher, appeared to breach strict Palace rules that guests must not take photos inside the royal residence.

In another cheeky snap, Tom posed in a mirror where he smiled for the camera while Jack stood behind it and made ‘peace’ signs with his hands

Tom and Matthew posed in the mirror of the bathroom with the gold medals they won at the synchronised 10-metre platform event at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics

During the reception, the 28-year-old diving gold medallist took a selfie with Mathew and Jack from a low angle as they peered over the camera lens while holding glasses of champagne.

On the ceiling, gold detailing was visible – which resembled the same detailing in official photos of the Olympians at the reception, which appeared to be held in the grand entrance of the Palace.

According to the Royal Collection Trust website: ‘Strictly no photography or filming at all is permitted inside the State Rooms.’

Tom also took a photo of his name card as he walked into the reception, which was taken above a red carpet.

The three divers (pictured) chatted to the King during the reception as he made his way around the hundreds of guests to greet them

The three divers also posed for selfies in one of the palace’s bathrooms. In one photo, they proudly held up their medals as they smiled for a snap in a mirror. Tom and Matthew held up the golds they had won in the synchronised 10-metre platform event at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics while Jack displayed his bronze medal from the three-metre springboard event at the same Games.

Jack, 26, also has an Olympic gold medal which he won at the Rio de Janeiro games in 2016.

In another, Tom, who was taking the photo, could be seen in the reflection of the mirror while Jack stood behind it and made ‘peace’ signs with his hands.

According to the Royal Collection Trust website, guests who are invited to the Palace are more than welcome to take photos in the Garden. In fact, it is encouraged.

The website states: ‘We love seeing your photos on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook – tag us with your best shots using #BuckinghamPalace.’

However, when guests remain inside the state rooms within the Palace, they are not permitted to take photos.

The King and Queen Consort were joined by Charles’s siblings Princess Anne and Prince Edward, as well as the Duke of Gloucester

The website also states: ‘Out of consideration to other visitors, we ask that you refrain from making or answering phone calls inside the State Rooms.’

FEMAIL has contacted Buckingham Palace for confirmation of whether or not the rules were breached.

Wednesday night’s reception saw hundreds of Team GB athletes attend Buckingham Palace, where they met the King and Queen Consort.

Ahead of the arrival of guests, a photo was taken of King Charles reunited with his siblings Princess Anne, who is honorary president of the Olympic Association, and Prince Edward, patron of the British Paralympic Association.

The King’s cousin Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, was also present in the photo alongside the Queen Consort.

During the reception Tom Daley and his teammates were pictured chatting to the King and shaking his hand as he greeted the hundreds of athletes at the event.

And the excitement was overwhelming for the diving star – who just couldn’t help but take a few snaps to document the occasion.

FEMAIL has reached out to Tom Daley’s reps for comment.
