The game is up for Freya Wozniak (Phoebe Roberts) and David Tanaka (Takaya Honda) in Neighbours next week, as they face the music for their role in Gareth Bateman’s death.
Gareth, as viewers will recall, died during the chaotic trip to River Bend, after he took Freya hostage, attacked Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson) and shot Levi Canning (Richie Morris).
Freya reclaimed the upper hand and crashed the van into a car, which sent Gareth flying through the windscreen. David, who happened to be driving by at the time, tended to the injured party.
He reconsidered helping dying Gareth, however, when Freya informed him that he was responsible for Aaron’s life-threatening injuries.
The doctor’s hesitation resulted Gareth dying, but soon enough, he came to regret his decision, as he reminded Freya that he is supposed to save lives, not take them.
A police investigation into Gareth’s demise was launched, but both David and Freya stuck to their initial story, claiming that the first aid kit in their possession did not have the equipment necessary to save Gareth’s life.
The death was therefore ruled accidental, with the coroners report suggesting the Gareth’s injuries were so severe it was likely he would’ve died anyway.
But David’s nightmare was far from over, as he was later blackmailed and tormented by a mystery resident claiming to know what he did.
Freya reckoned that Gareth’s girlfriend Emma was behind the scheme, while David thought nemesis Dean had something to do with it, but they have no evidence to prove either theory.
Next week, however, the blackmailer ups the ante, forcing Freya to take action, as she gets in touch with estranged brother Zane, hoping that he will help her in getting some of the money to meet the tormentor’s demands.
Zane is hesitant at first, but Freya pleads with him for assistance, which ultimately does the trick, as Zane agrees to lend her the funds necessary.
Freya is delighted, but despite having secured the cash, she and David are not out of the woods.
David, meanwhile, keys Dean’s car!
Freya is furious with him, but David just wants the blackmailing to stop, and thus he confronts Dean once more, asking him to refrain from playing games.
Dean claims to have no idea what he is referring to, and thus, with little options left, David and Freya make a huge decision.
They decide to confess!
The hospital duo make their way to the police station, where they ultimately reveal everything. Levi is taken aback by Freya’s lies, while Clive struggles to believe what David has done.
The pair are then questioned further, and afterwards, they finally discover the identity of their mystery blackmailer!
The question is: just who is it? What’s more, is it too late to bring said person to justice?
That remains to be seen, but in the aftermath of their confession, David and Freya are surrounded by support, although Levi is still somewhat distant with Freya.
The duo soon meet with their lawyers – a meeting which proves to be a painful one to say the least!
Their defence strategy will focus on their traumatic stress, but will this be enough to excuse their actions?
