While the aftermath of the chemical attack is over for many, some are still suffering from its effects – particularly Martha (Belinda Giblin), who has been receiving kidney dialysis in the city. However, she has been told she can be transferred back to Northern Districts, much to Alf’s (Ray Meagher) relief – he no longer needs to divide his time between Marilyn (Emily Symons) and his wife, and Martha can enjoy the benefits of being closer to home.
Martha’s condition has unfortunately deteriorated to the extent that she needs a kidney transplant, and both Alf and Roo (Georgie Parker) are keeping their hopes up that Roo will come back as a
match so she can donate and save her mother’s life. Meanwhile, when Logan comes to visit, he says that home dialysis could be an option – which would in turn cure Martha’s homesickness.
Although Alf and Roo are cautious, Martha says the prospect is all she has to look forward to, and Alf promises he will make home dialysis a reality. Back at home, Roo is hesitant about Alf making promises he may not be able to keep. Alf is keen to bring Martha home as soon as possible, but Roo reminds him of the hurdles they still need to overcome – converting the water and electricity, plus covering the costs.
Alf declares he doesn’t care how much it costs and he just wants Martha out of the hospital. Both father and daughter end up taking out their frustrations on each other, despite wanting the same thing.
Trying to come up with a solution, Roo suggests they broach the topic of selling the house in Merimbula to cover the medical fees. Reluctantly, Alf agrees to bring it up with her, but in the hospital, he ends up backing out of the conversation as he doesn’t want to disappoint her.
In the morning, Roo shows up at the hospital to find her father in a distressed state – the doctors have taken Martha away for more tests as she didn’t have a good night.
Determined to get more information, Roo finds out that the medical team are concerned about Martha’s rapid deterioration – what’s more, they are starting to believe she might not hold on for the transplant…
