Lawn growth slows down during winter as the temperature drops, however this certainly doesn’t mean that gardeners should neglect their lawn. One expert has advised Briton on what they should do to achieve healthy lawn growth.
David Truby, Managing Director of Greensleeves has explained how lawn care is important, even during the winter months.
He said: “In January, many lawns appear particularly thin and weak.
“If yours is prone to suffering from cold conditions there are a few possible explanations worth considering before deciding upon the appropriate course of action to get your lawn looking its best again as it wakes up to the spring and summer months.
“It’s essential to keep our gardens ticking over in the winter months so don’t neglect your garden this January.”
David advised gardeners on when to mow their lawn.
He said: “Grass growth slows and becomes increasingly dormant during winter, but it’s growth certainly doesn’t stop completely, and neither should mowing your lawn.
“The trick is to continue mowing your lawn as needed, never allowing it to become too long.
“This can significantly reduce the quality and potentially increase the severity of moss invasion.”

Using blunt lawnmower blades can damage the growth of the grass by roughly ripping through it and leave behind torn tips on the ends of the individual grass blades.
David explained: “It is important that you ensure the mower blades are sharp, so as not to cause damage to the lawn itself.”
It’s recommended that lawnmower blades are sharpened at least once a year.
If gardeners are unaware of how to sharpen the blades, they can always purchase replacement ones.
Grass should never be cut during frosty periods.
David said: “Never attempt to mow your lawn if it is saturated or covered in frost.”
Mowing the grass when there is frost leads to yellow or brown discolouration spots around the lawn and dead patches of grass.
Plus, there’s a good chance that the lawn may suffer from grass rot if there’s frost shortly after mowing.
David also shared how to prevent fungal diseases growing in the garden.
He said: “Taking extra care to remove excess leaves and debris by raking.”
This helps to prevent environments which may encourage fungal diseases.
This is very common during the winter months.
