December festivities have officially started and as we spend more time indoors enjoying the festive season, a lot of us are forgetting about our lawn outside in the cold, wet, wintery weather. This weather can cause damage to our garden, and often be the catalyst for diseases. However, there are jobs you can do and things you can put in place to prevent the December weather from damaging your lawn.
Here, Carlos Real, Lawn Care Expert and Managing Director of TotalLawn, reveals the jobs we should be doing on our lawns during December.
Don’t be afraid to use your lawn mower
Just because it’s December doesn’t mean you can’t use your lawn mower. This year, the weather has been quite mild for this time of year, so it’s more than likely that your grass is still growing. If this is the case, then you may find that it’s slightly too long and will need to be cut back down to your desired height.
Be careful though, as the temperature does drop in December, and you don’t want to be mowing your lawn if your lawn is covered in frost. Mowing your lawn in the frost will break the grass blades and damage your lawn, therefore it’s best to wait until the frost has disappeared and the temperature has risen slightly.
Look out for snow mould
If we get snow over December, then your lawn might be prone to developing the lawn disease snow mould, also known as, Fusarium Patch. Snow mould is difficult to control and is extremely damaging to your lawn. Fusarium Patch begins as small patches of dying grass, which start yellow and eventually turn brown, that increase and merge together, covering large quantities of our lawns.
It can be difficult to control, so it’s better to prevent it rather than treat it. However, if you notice it developing throughout December, then there can be one fungicide available to buy that can be used as a temporary solution and that’s trifloxystrobin. Just make sure not to use it if your lawn is frozen.
Remove the weeds
Weeds can still grow on your lawn throughout December, so it’s important to keep a check on your lawn and remove any weeds that might be growing. Weeds will often take the vital nutrients and sunlight that your grass plant needs to survive so it’s important to keep on top of it, to reduce the risk of your lawn becoming damaged.

Keep your lawn tidy
To give your lawn the best possible chance to survive the cold, dark winter months then you need to make sure you keep it tidy. It sounds simple, but leaving objects on your lawn, such as garden furniture or debris, could increase the risk of your lawn suffocating and limiting the sunlight it requires to survive.
For the same reason, you also need to keep on top of your leaves and remove any leaves that fall onto your lawn. If you keep your lawn tidy throughout the winter it will reduce the risk of diseases developing and having a negative impact on your lawn.
Just because it’s December, it doesn’t mean we can forget about our lawns. We should be looking after our lawns all-year round. In the winter, it’s even more important to look after our lawns. If we keep on top of our lawn care regime throughout the winter, it will be more beneficial for our lawns and make our lives easier when Springtime comes back around.
