Founder of Gardening Express Chris Bonnett is expecting a surge in Christmas tree orders this year. However, the gardening expert said there could be a shortage of the festive trees due to a lack of lorry drivers and potential COVID-19 restrictions still in place surrounding travel. Last year, the festive period was cut short for many Britons after the Government scrapped plans to relax Covid rules at Christmas.
Now, it’s looking like many Britons could find themselves without a real Christmas tree.
Lorry driver shortages in Denmark are expected to impact imports into the UK while Covid-related restrictions could only exacerbate the problem.
Denmark is a major producer of love Christmas trees with around 90 percent of its trees being exported to other European countries.
The country faced problems last year after a coronavirus mutation was found on mink farms.
The country halted its exports in order to control the outbreak.
There are now less than 100 days until Christmas, with September due to come to an end in just over a week.
Britons have merely months to make their Christmas preparations and ensure they can get their hands on everything they need.
Chris has already seen a surge in customers searching for Christmas trees on his site.

To ensure you get a tree in plenty of time, Chris is urging Britons to “plan ahead” and get their essentials “pre-ordered”.
Chris Bonnett from GardeningExpress.co.uk said: “The last few years have played havoc with the Christmas tree market. Mild winters in Scandinavian countries have made it more complicated to fell trees.
“Add in the Covid restrictions in place last year and the current shortage of lorry drivers and you can see why we’re concerned that there could be a shortage of trees.
“A Christmas tree is an essential part of the festivities, not just on Christmas Day but in the run up – picking the tree, squeezing it into the car and decorating ahead of the celebrations.

“This year it’ll mean even more after the locked down restrictions of last year which is why we’re already seeing a surge in the number of customers searching for Christmas trees.
“Hopefully between now and December, things will improve.”
Bonnett added: “We are seeing issues with disruption across the retail sector, from food and drink to gifts and clothing.
“For Britons really wanting to go all out to celebrate this year, the best advice is to plan ahead and get all the essentials pre-ordered so you can enjoy the festivities without the stress.”
Another Christmas tradition that could be in short supply this year is turkey.
A shortage in CO2 could see the Christmas delicacy off the menu as the CO2 shortage continues to threaten food supply and access to turkeys.
Spiking energy prices have seen two large fertiliser plants in the UK suspend production, accounting for about 60 percent of the UK’s commercial supply.
CO2 is essential to the humane slaughter of livestock and extends the shelf life of fresh products.
