Gardening tips: Alan Titchmarsh shares how to seed lawns
The experts from iCANLAWN.COM explained: “Autumn is a fantastic time to sow grass seed.
“The weather’s not too hot or cold, it’s just right this time of year. We recommend temperatures of 10C and above for growing grass seed, and September offers this in most parts of the UK without fail.
“On top of that, the ground’s still warm from summer, and there’s enough rain to water your lawn without drowning your new seedlings.”
By sowing grass seed now, the lawn will have plenty of time to “grow strong” before winter shows up.
It’s also a great way to prep the grass for the following year as gardeners won’t need to reseed in spring.

The pros added: “Since weather conditions are generally perfect this time of year, your new lawn will grow strong and resilient next year.
“Weeds will start to pack their bags come September. That means less competition for your fresh batch of grass seedlings.
“With fewer weeds around, your grass gets all the attention it deserves, sunlight, water and nutrients, without having to fight against other plants to grow.”

To start with, remove any weeds or moss before mowing and scarifying the lawn. Sow the seed and firm it in before watering it, and the job is done.
The experts added: “You should also make sure that you are overseeding with the right lawn seed.
“If you are struggling with shade, opt for a shade-tolerant seed mix.

“For a lawn that will withstand the daily activities of the family, try a fast-growing lawn seed mix. Or if you want a lawn that will outshine the others, try a more fine-line seed.”
Sowing seed now will also mean it’ll germinate much quicker thanks to the warm soil and cooler air.
Not only does this mean a “fuller lawn” quicker, but it also helps prevent soil erosion and keeps things looking neat.
