Best height to cut grass this month to achieve ‘lush thick lawns’ for summer

Gardeners should have cut their grass a few times already this year, and as we head into summer and longer evenings, many will be wanting to repair the damage of winter, and have lush, green grass for summer.

Express.co.uk spoke exclusively to Clair Albone, Senior Category Manager of Garden Maintenance at Wickes about the best methods to make lawns picture perfect.

Clair said: “When days become longer and warmer, lawns can receive all the nutrients they need at a shorter length.

“Gardeners can start by mowing one to two times a month at this point, but as May gets underway and June approaches, lawns can be mowed as often as once a week, as warm temperatures paired with moist soil will lead to fast growth.”

Many mowers offer gardeners different height settings, but it can be tricky to know which is best to use over the next couple of months.

The first cut of the year, the mower should’ve been set at its highest cutting height, and from there on, the height should be reduced.

Wickes recommends “cutting the height of the grass by about a third each time” you mow, and Clair added: “It’s key to leave around 1.5 inches in length for your lawn, leaving gardens tidy and avoiding bare patches in your garden.”

Remember: Try not to mow the grass when it’s wet or damp as clumps will form. If you mow regularly, you can leave the short cuttings to mulch the lawn.

As for how gardeners can achieve thick, lush grass for summer after cutting it to the perfect length, Clair recommended using a lawn feed.

For “households that love their lawn, but are put off using chemicals due to safety concerns over children and pets,” consider a ‘Safe Lawn Green Organic Fertiliser.

This will result in a “healthier and stronger lawn” the expert said.

Then for “gardeners looking to fix patches in their lawn”, patch seed and feed “is a great solution”.

Clair added: “Both products [will] help customers create a healthier and stronger lawn ready for summer.”

For gardeners who are struggling with moss growing amongst their grass, Clair shared her advice.

“Weeds are a common issue for homeowners, not just excluded to grassy spaces, the pesky plants also grow between cracks in paving and underneath gravel,” she remarked,

“Lawns left with bare patches provide the perfect environment for moss to grow, so ensuring grass is evenly cut and fertilised is key for prevention.

“Avoid mowing too low as this can scalp the lawn which can create an opportunities for moss and weeds to establish.”

There are products available to help gardeners “suffering with moss growth” and Clair recommended Aftercut All In One Lawn Feed, Weed and Moss Killer to “combat weeds and moss, while simultaneously providing nutrients for a stronger lawn”.

It works “with just one application”, and “gardeners can see results in as little as seven days”, she added.

Finally, “to create a picture-perfect lawn”, gardeners should consider edging their land.

Clair said to “invest in high tech tools designed to make grass cutting a breeze”, and suggested a trimmer with a “versatile head, for hands-free head tilting and edging adjustments, perfect for switching between trimming and edging”.
