Sainsbury’s has announced a change to its Nectar Card which is already in position and affects thousands of shoppers. The supermarket giant is turning “points into positivity” and has launched Nectar Donate which sees points turned into charity donations.
Sainsbury’s has partnered with Crowdfunder to create Nectar Donate.
It will see customers donate points to help support UK charities and causes of their choice; rom local charities to larger national charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
From January 24, customers can donate points at any time to a charity of their choice by simply logging on to the Nectar app and clicking on Crowdfunder.
All charities participating in Nectar Donate are eligible for donations from the £250million worth of points across Nectar’s 18 million UK members.
With no hidden fees, every single Nectar point donated will be converted into funding that goes directly into the pocket of the chosen charitable organisation, while customers will be kept updated on how their donation, however big or small, has helped support and make a difference.
The minimum donation value is 200 points, equivalent to £1.
This is the same value as what Nectar points are worth if you were to spend them in stores at Sainsbury’s.
As for how Nectar points work, you get one Nectar point for every £1 spent, with one Nectar point worth 0.5p in return.
This means if you earn one point from a purchase it’s the equivalent of 0.5 percent cashback.
Nectar cards can currently be collected in hundreds of stores across the UK – including Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat, VUE cinemas and on eBay.
Alex Naisby, Head of Loyalty and CRM at Nectar spoke about this new partnership and said: “We’re proud to have teamed up with Crowdfunder to launch Nectar Donate, a new and simple way for customers to support the charities and causes that they really care about with their Nectar points.
“Our customers have always been extremely generous whenever we have run charity donation campaigns in the past and we know that many of them are interested in supporting local charities.
“So, whether it’s donating those forgotten points or a bank of saved up points, we’re making it even easier for customers to turn their Nectar points into positivity.”
Simon Deverell, Founder and Creative Director at Crowdfunder said: “Nectar Donate gives charities the opportunity to benefit from Nectar customers donating their points to good causes.
“At a time when charities have suffered massively due to the pandemic and donors have felt the pinch, this amazing partnership creates an entirely new way for people to give to, and fundraise for, the causes they care about.
“We’re really excited about this revolutionary new approach to charitable giving and we’re so pleased to add this innovation to our suite of products.”
Hilary Evans, Chief Executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “We’re delighted that people can now support the important work of charities like Alzheimer’s Research UK through Nectar Donate. Despite the challenges of the last two years, we continue to be humbled by the generosity of the British public.
“One in two people know someone affected by dementia, so now more than ever, that support will help drive our research towards breakthroughs that change lives.”
