Queen Elizabeth was famously “not a foodie” according to former royal chef Darren McGrady. Speaking of the Queen’s food choices, Mr McGrady stated: “With the Queen, she did stick mainly to the same dishes most of the time.”

He added: “If we bought a new dish on the menu, we would write it in the menu, send it up to the Queen, and then she would get to choose which she wanted. If we had a new recipe, then we actually have to send the recipe up to the Queen.”

However, the late Queen Elizabeth II really did get the occasional takeaway from time to time. According to The Sun, the former monarch was rather partial to fish and chips and sometimes treated herself to dinner from the local chippy when staying at Balmoral.

A footman was reportedly sent to pick up her meal from the nearby town Ballater. The late monarch also enjoyed a kebab in the past, which sounds like an unusual choice for Her Late Majesty.

Royal correspondent Jayne Seymour shared that Krazy Kebabs takeaway in Swaffham once got a delivery order by telephone to Sandringham House, after the Queen was dared to dry one by Prince Harry.

The delivery driver Ahmet Sudoku told Jayne: “I assumed the food was for a servant. But when I got to the entrance a butler took it and said it was for the Queen. I hope she enjoyed it – we are known for the best kebabs in Norfolk.”

The late Queen reportedly ate through half of the kebab, after a dare from her grandson Prince Harry, who at the time had just celebrated his 32nd birthday.

The extraordinary incident, which showed Her Late Majesty’s great sense of humour, happened after a lively family lunch at Sandringham House to celebrate Harry’s 32nd birthday.

A royal insider told the Suffolk Gazette in 2016: “Harry had enjoyed a few glasses of wine, and when the Queen asked him if there was anything particular he would like for his birthday, he blurted out, ‘You have to eat a doner kebab’.

“She had no idea exactly what one of those was, and agreed immediately to the challenge, much to Philip’s surprise. As a Greek, he was perfectly aware of what was in store for her.

“The conversation moved on and it looked like everyone had forgotten about it. But last week, the Krazy Kebabs takeaway in Swaffham, 17 miles away, got a delivery order by telephone… to Sandringham House.”

According to royal staff, the late Queen reportedly found the sauce on the kebab a bit hot, but she managed to eat about half of the kebab.

Prince Philip apparently found the ordeal hilarious and sent photographic evidence to the Duke of Sussex as proof that the Queen had completed the dare.

A lamb doner kebab from the Swaffham establishment costs just £6.90, and a chicken one would set you back £7.20.

The description for the lamb version which is what Her Late Majesty reportedly tried, says: “Fresh lamb specially seasoned and grilled on an upright spit. Then carved & served in a pitta with fresh salad.”

Other members of the Royal Family have been known to order takeaways from time to time. Back in 2017, Princess Kate shared her number one takeaway while speaking to BBC Radio 1 with Prince William.

Kate said: “Curry, definitely,” before clarifying that William wouldn’t eat it with her as he is not a fan of spicy food.

The couple added: “It doesn’t usually get ordered to the palace, we tend to go and pick it up,” before jokingly adding “not ourselves!” During an appearance on BBC Radio Five Live’s “That Peter Crouch Podcast”, which was recorded at Kensington Palace in March 2020, William was handed a takeaway curry from Crouch’s local Indian restaurant Samrat in Ealing.

When quizzed about his favourite dish, the Prince replied: “Chicken masala, love that, a bit of flavour – I’m not a vindaloo man put it that way.”

As well as admitting on Radio 1 that he found the choice between pizza and Chinese food the hardest, William shared he also eats Nando’s after being introduced to the cuisine by his police protection officer.

In addition, back in 2013, The Mirror reported that Prince Harry picked up a late-night meal from Nandos in Fulham, ordering a chicken pitta with extra cheese plus creamy mash on the side and a double chicken wrap with fries.
