Reason for recall: Undeclared mustard
The Food Stamdards Agency (FSA) issued a risk statement: “This product contains mustard, making it a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to mustard.”
Costa Coffee has put steps in place to keep customers safe: “Costa Coffee is recalling the above product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall.
“The company has also issued a point-of-sale notice to its customers.
“These notices explain to customers why the product is being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the product.”
In the customer notice, Costa Coffee explained: “Customer safety is of paramount importance to Costa Coffee and we take all issues regarding the production of our foods extremely seriously.
“Costa Coffee is recalling it’s British Roast Chicken Salad Sandwich given the presence of mustard in a small number of incorrectly labelled packs.
“Any customers in possession of this product who have a mustard allergy or intolerance, or who wish to exchange the product, can return it to their nearest store where a full refund will be given.”
The coffeehouse apolgoised for any inconvenience caused to customers, and assured them that no other products have been affected.
For further information, Costa Coffee encouraged customers to contact 0333 003 5883.
The FSA reirrated this: “If you have bought the above product and have an allergy to mustard, do not eat it.
“Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. For further information contact Costa Coffee on 0333 003 5883.”
Customers must take food recalls very seriously, even though they are not very common.
The FSA explained: “Sometimes there will be a problem with a food product that means it should not be sold.
“Then it might be ‘withdrawn’ (taken off the shelves) or ‘recalled’ (when customers are asked to return the product).
“Sometimes foods have to be withdrawn or recalled if there is a risk to consumers because the allergy labelling is missing or incorrect or if there is any other food allergy risk.
“When there is a food allergy risk, the FSA will issue an Allergy Alert.”
