When Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal wedding took place on April 29, 2011, royal fans across the world were desperate to see what dress Kate would be wearing for her big day. The beautiful bride didn’t disappoint when she emerged at Westminster Abbey in a stunning white gown fit for a future Queen.
Many drew instant comparisons between Kate’s spectacular gown and the wedding dress worn by Grace Kelly when she married Prince Rainier III of Monaco in 1956.
Like Princess Grace’s gown, Kate’s dress boasted impressive lace detailing and a high-waisted full skirt.
Kate and Grace’s dresses also had impressive trains, and both royal brides opted for very sheer veils for their big days.
Kate Beavis, owner of the contemporary wedding blog Magpie Wedding, told Express.co.uk: “The Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress, designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, in many ways looked back to designs from the past while setting new trends within the bridal industry.
“It reminded us of the wedding dress worn by the late Grace Kelly, Princess of Monaco, with its long sleeves and 1950s silhouette – a fitted bodice, nipped-in waist and flared skirt.
“Before her wedding to Prince William, brides were choosing sleeveless dresses, with a sweetheart neckline and no veil – then afterwards we saw a real move to a more vintage look with long veils, delicate laces and that flattering hourglass cut.”
Aside from their classic designs, Kate and Grace’s dresses also drew other comparisons.
Daena Borrowman, Marketing Manager at jewellerybox, told Express.co.uk: “Both wedding dresses were designed by formidable female designers.
“Kate’s £250,000 dress was designed by Sarah Burton, the Creative Director of Alexander McQueen; Grace Kelly’s gown, which would be worth over £472,000 today, was designed by Helen Rose, the Chief Designer of costumes and clothing at MGM.
“In fact, Kate and Grace’s dresses have much more in common than many of us realise.
“A little known fact about both dresses is that the yards upon yards of French lace that was used on both dresses came from the same French lace manufacturer, Solstiss.”
As she was about to become the wife of a future King, Kate opted to wear a tiara from the Queen’s personal jewellery collection for her big day.

The Cartier Halo Tiara, beloved for its delicate detailing and dainty size, was worn by Kate on her big day, and it has touching royal provenance.
The tiara was purchased by King George VI for his wife, the future Queen Mother, who gifted it to the Queen on her 18th birthday when she was still Princess Elizabeth.
The tiara has since been worn by the Queen’s sister Princess Margaret and the Queen’s daughter Princess Anne before it had its royal wedding debut in 2011.
Kate also wore a pair of earrings gifted to her by her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.
