I’m an etiquette coach – the fashion mistake that makes you look cheap & like you’re compensating for growing up poor | The Sun

FASHION fans, if you're proud of your high-end accessories, beware: your "statement jewelry" may not be saying what you think it is.

One etiquette expert decoded the embarrassing message you might be sending with your accessory choices, and explained how to communicate class and sophistication instead.

Etiquette coach and influencer Karina uses TikTok to espouse elegance tips to her 361k followers. In a recent video, she called out one of her biggest fashion pet peeves.

"Why does this look cheesy, cheap and horrible?" Karina asked at the start of the video.

She pointed to a photo behind her, showing a woman's arm stacked with expensive Cartier bracelets and a watch with the brand name in bold letters on its face.

The etiquette coach explained the message a stack of fancy jewelry sends to observers.

"On a psychological level, this is signaling overcompensation for something else," Karina said.

"It could be 'I'm trying to show everybody that I have money,' maybe 'I've never had money before and this is the first opportunity to show that I do.'"

In turn, she said, designer pieces look cheap, and the quality of their construction is lost.

"That doesn't mean don't wear designer pieces," she explained. "They can be done in a tasteful way."

To demonstrate,Karina showed an editorial picture of a Bulgari necklace on model Lily Aldridge.

Aside from the stunning necklace and smoky eyeliner, there wasn't much else to the minimal look, and Karina said that's what made it pop.

"That looks fierce, it looks sophisticated," Karina explained.

"The attention is on the jewel but also on her beauty," the etiquette coach added. "She doesn't look like she's seeking attention."

If you want to wear fashion jewelry, Karina said the best way to showcase it is with a minimalist take.

In the comments section, she clarified that the rule applies to high-end jewelry as well as more affordable pieces.

"This has nothing to do with money," she said. "It looks cheap if it’s with designer and fashion jewelry."
