Whether you’re blessed with curls genetically or you use a curling wand to fake some ringlets, curly hair is never the same when slept on. You can make your curls look uniform and perfect before you sleep, but in the morning they will be frizzy if they’re natural or will have completely dropped if you’ve used a heat styler. Don’t worry, there are a few hacks that can help you keep your hair curly overnight to prolong the style.

How to keep styled curls overnight

If you’ve got naturally straight hair, you probably enjoy curling your hair every now and then.

Thin hair in particular doesn’t hold curls well, so there’s no chance of sleeping on heat-styled curls and waking up with them still in place.

It’s frustrating to put so much effort into styling your hair and creating flawless curls only for them to fall flat overnight.

Even if you curl your hair in the morning, most of the time the curls will drop by lunchtime.

Dirtier hair will hold curls better than freshly washed hair.

If you’re on day two or three after washing your hair, your hair will have more texture and a grittiness that helps curls last.

Hair that has just been washed and dried is too silky and their curls will slip right out.

You should also use a smaller barrel or thinner wand to curl your hair because the tighter the curl, the longer it takes to unwind.

You won’t wake up with coiled ringlets, they’ll be edgy-looking beach waves.

Another tip involves the temperature of your hair when curling them.

Let the tight ringlets cool down before you style them and brush them out gently and go to bed.

If you want to wake up with more dramatic curls rather than waves, twist your curls into little buns.

Simply section your hair into at least eight little sections and pin your curls in a coil onto your head and sleep in them.

Wear a silk bonnet or sleep on a silk pillowcase – this is better than any other fabric as silk won’t roughly rub against your hair and cause frizz.

Your hair will look freshly curled in the morning if you follow these steps, but the flawless look might not last very long without the product.

Don’t brush your hair, but if you need to brush it then use a wide-toothed comb and some long-hold hairspray.

If you want a beach wave look, use some salt spray to add some gritty texture and don’t brush your hair at all.

How to keep natural hair curly overnight

If you’ve got curly hair and want to make the best of the locks you were lucky to be born with.

Most of the time your curly hair will hold its ribbon shape no matter what you do to it.

However, girls with curly hair know that you need to treat your hair with extra care while you sleep to protect them and help them to hold the structure.

Your curls will look their best when you wake up if you use the ‘plopping’ method.

Hair plopping is a social media trend that involves using a piece of cotton or a t-shirt to keep your curls bouncy and healthy-looking.

Express.co.uk chatted to Elinor Davies-Farn, Founder of curly hair brand, Olew to find out how to plop your hair.

After shampooing and conditioning your hair, apply a hair oil while your hair is dripping wet.

Elinor recommends Olew’s Cleansing Shampoo, Clarifying Conditioner and Original Hair Oil, but you could use a different brand if you’ve already got products at home.

She said: “Apply the hair oil all over your hair and then use a dime-sized amount of curl cream, such as the Olew Curl Cream, to nourish and define the curls.”

Next, use a long sleeve cotton t-shirt and gently scrunch curls in an upward motion. Elinor said: “you will hear a gratifying ‘squelch’ whilst doing it.”

After that, you’re going to wrap your head in the t-shirt.

Elinor explained: “Place your long sleeve t-shirt out flat on a surface. Bend your head over, allowing your wet hair to cascade forward, then tilt your head so that the ends of your locks go towards the centre of the t-shirt.

“Then start the wrapping by taking the two corners of the t-shirt, wrapping them around the nape of your neck.

“Take the neckline of the t-shirt and pull it over your hair. Your hair should now be cupped inside the T-shirt and the arms should be free.

“Now, grab one arm with each hand, stand up straight, bring both T-shirt arms up and tie them together in a knot.”

Leave your hair wrapped in the t-shirt overnight and then style it how you like in the morning.

Your hair will be noticeably less frizzy and much shinier, moisturised and bouncy.
