Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom is Nintendo’s biggest game in terms of file size

The Nintendo eShop has revealed that Tears Of The Kingdom has a file size of 18.2GB, making it notably bigger than Breath Of The Wild.

Wednesday’s Nintendo Direct has been widely acclaimed as a success but if there was any disappointment it was that the segment on Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom was surprisingly short and didn’t really reveal anything new about the game.

There is one piece of information that’s come to light since, though, with the UK eShop listing the game’s file size as 18.64 GB. The Japanese and American ones have it as 18.2GB, although all of the file sizes listed on the UK site are larger than Japan and America, likely because of additional European language support.

Either way, that’s not only bigger than the 14.77GB of Zelda: Breath Of The World but it’s the biggest game Nintendo has ever released.

Big in terms of file size doesn’t necessarily mean big in terms of the in-game world, although everything so far suggests Tears Of The Kingdom will include the world from Breath Of The Wild and a new layer of floating islands in the sky.

The file size of Tears Of The Kingdom is not the biggest on the Nintendo Switch though, just of the games Nintendo has made itself, with NBA 2K23 coming in at an absurd 55.81GB.

That’s still nothing compared to games on other formats though, especially MMOs and live service titles, which regularly top 100GB.

Call Of Duty is especially infamous for its bloated file size, with the total for Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2.0 hitting close to 200GB, and likely to exceed it after the next season of new content.

The moral of the lesson? If you’re looking forward to playing Breath Of The Wild you better clear out the fridge, as you need to make a lot of room for it on your Switch or buy a new SD memory card.

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom will be released on May 12 for Nintendo Switch.
