It’s out on Friday and yet Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is going to need multiple updates before its frame rate and other issues are fixed.
We were pretty impressed by Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel Survivor, in our review, but we did note that the PlayStation 5 version had some serious frame rate problems, which were surprising to see in an otherwise slick experience.
Apparently, and this is becoming a trend, the PC version is even worse, and yet oddly the Xbox Series X version is mostly fine. You can guess what EA’s answer to this is but instead of just a massive day one patch they’re threatening weeks of updates.
The game was already delayed by six weeks to add extra ‘polish’ but it’s clear it needed more than that to sort out all the issues. The game also doesn’t come with all the accessibility options that were promised, as they’ll have to be added in later too.
The primary problem seems to be the game’s open world areas – particularly areas with water, we noticed – with the more linear sections being largely okay. Fallen Order didn’t have any open world sections, so it seems developer Respawn had difficulty implementing them.
Why the Xbox version is less affected is unclear but on PlayStation 5 choosing performance mode, which is meant to prioritise frame rate, makes no difference to the issues.
Although it’s relatively uncommon for console versions to suffer this badly at launch it’s become sadly routine for PC games, which have endured performance issues no matter the franchise or publisher.
The PC version of The Last Of Us Part 1 was one of the worst recent examples but it’s affected almost every major game for at least the last year, with publishers seemingly having learnt nothing from the disaster of Cyberpunk 2077.
