Sonic Origins Plus retro compilation spotted via Korean age rating board

It looks like Sega is planning a new version of the flawed Sonic Origins, but will it fix the bugs or just add new content?

The first new game of 2023 to be outed by an age rating board is… Sonic Origin Plus, which judging by the name seems to be an updated version of the controversial Sonic Origins compilation from last year.

There’s no information on what exactly it is, but the name implies that it will work similarly to Sonic Mania Plus, which also followed a few months after the original release and added extra playable characters and other relatively minor pieces of content.

Since the extra content was also available as DLC, and Sonic Mania was really good, everyone was perfectly happy with the Plus version, but Sonic Origins Plus will likely be welcomed for a different reason…

Sonic Origins featured remastered versions of Mega Drive and Mega-CD games Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, aka ‘the good ones’.

These versions featured minor enhancements and changes, such as widescreen support and no lives, extra character options, and achievement-like ‘missions’ to complete.

That was all fair enough but the new versions also managed to introduce bugs that weren’t previously present and even the original developers were unhappy with Sega releasing the game the way they did.

You might imagine then that this is being used as an opportunity to fix those problems, although if Sega expects anyone to pay for that privilege they’ll likely have a fan rebellion on their hands.

It’s more than possible that other new content will also be added, perhaps one of the spin-off games, but after first being spotted by Gematsu the ratings listing offers no further clues.

If the game already has an age rating though that implies it’s almost ready for release, so we should be hearing something official in the next few weeks.
