Shocking the music world, Irish artist and activist Sinéad O’Connor has died at the age of 56. The death of the outspoken icon was announced by her family earlier today by her family in a brief official statement. “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad,” the statement said. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
Born Sinead Marie Bernadette O’Connor in Glenageary, County Dublin, in December 1966, the Irish singer started her fascination with music during her difficult childhood. While placed in Dublin’s An Grianan Training Centre, a space for troubled young girls, a nun gifted her a guitar and organized a music teacher for her. Sinéad O’Connor was known for her evocative musical styling, releasing 10 studio albums between 1987 and 2014, and her outspoken nature. An activist for social and political issues, following an acapella performance of Bob Marley’s “War” during an appearance on Saturday Night Live, O’Connor famously ripped a photo of Pope John Paul II in protest against child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church.
In 2018, Sinéad O’Connor converted to Islam and changed her name to Shuhada’ Sadaqat. Most recently, the artist canceled all of her 2022 performances following the death of her 17-year-old son in January 2022.
Our condolences go out to the friends and family of Sinéad O’Connor. Rest in peace.
