Michael Douglas, 78, declares it 'a pleasure' to finally be in non R-rated film

Michael Douglas has reflected on his role in upcoming movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as he basks in being in a film that’s suitable for younger audiences.

Some of the 78-year-old star’s biggest and best known roles have been in movies such as Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct and Wall Street, all of which were slapped with an R rating upon release in the US, meaning under 17s must be accompanied by an adult.

In the UK, they were mainly initially given an 18 certification, while Wall Street was a 15.

However, the MCU is bringing younger fans into Douglas’ orbit due to his role as Dr Hank Pym, an experience which he calls ‘a pleasure’.

Speaking at the Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania press conference on what he thought was particularly special about the films, he told Metro.co.uk and other press: ‘I think the Ant-Man pictures refer to family a lot and it brings a vulnerability to these super-powered characters that we see in a lot of Marvel films. And the sense of humour – it’s really a pleasure.’

He added: ‘I think it’s the sort of fun element about it, certainly it’s the danger [too]. It seems to relate to all different ages.

‘[For] someone like myself, whose mostly referenced with R-rated movies, this has been a pleasure to have younger kids coming up and enjoying it and seeing what’s going on, so kudos to everyone.’

In the upcoming film, hero Scott Lang, a.k.a Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) gets sucked into the Quantum Realm alongside his family, including daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton), partner Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), and her parents, Hank and Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer).

Douglas and Pfeiffer get plenty to sink their teeth into when it comes to the action of a superhero flick, with Pfeiffer even admitting she wishes she’d had more time to prepare for the more physically demanding sections.

‘It’s a lot of fun, I like doing that sort of thing. I like that Janet is kind of a bad ass,’ she revealed at the press conference.

However, Douglas admits to taking a more relaxed approach ahead of filming, joking: ‘My preparation was, “Look Ma, I’m in a Marvel film!”’

He was full of praise for his female co-stars though, including the ‘incredible’ Pfeiffer.

‘I enjoyed that opportunity to watch [Michelle] and Evangeline in action and could not be more blessed to have two women action heroes supporting the old man better than anything!’

Ant-Man And the Wasp: Quantumania is set for release on February 17, 2023.
