Matty Healy has apologised for causing ‘hurt’ in pursuit of his ‘rockstar’ image and promised to ‘do better moving forward.’
The 34-year-old 1975 rocker made a surprise lengthy statement on stage last night at the Hollywood Bowl, confronting his various controversies with a sweeping statement about his intententions.
He certainly knows how to make a headline, as the Chocolate hitmaker has caused uproar from actions like kissing fans and eating raw meat on stage. Matty now says all his controversial comments and acts were done in pursuit of the ‘rockstar’ image.
But at its worst, Matty’s – what he now dubs – ‘exaggerated version’ of himself in interviews, has been accused racism, misogyny, Islamophobia, and antisemitism with accusations going as far back as when the group found fame in 2013.
When Matty started seemingly dating Taylor Swift, 33, earlier this year – which was obviously massive news because everyone is obsessed with the country megastar’s love life – these controversial clips of the singer resurfaced.
In recent months, Matty has come under fire for calling Harry Styles a ‘queerbaiter’ and laughing at derogatory comments towards Ice Spice, and he’s even been called out on a Glastonbury stage by Rina Sawayama.

Previously Matty has issued apologies, but people weren’t convinced they were super sincere. In Finsbury Park back in July though, signs began to show of the rockstar façade melting somewhat, as Matty admitted there were ‘things [he] would take back.’
Now, it seems to have slipped even further, as Matty issued a lengthy apology at a recent gig – but with a caveat. He didn’t mean it.
‘Because some of my actions have hurt some people I apologise to those people, and I pledge to do better moving forward,’ he told the crowd, who cheered him on.
‘Yeah, give it up for the old apology,’ he quipped, before continuing: ‘But I think it’s also important that I express my intentions so everybody knows that there is no ill will coming from me.
‘You see as an artist, I want to create an environment for myself to perform where not everything I do is taken literally.

‘For example, I’m on stage right now, but I don’t do this in my normal life. I don’t go around singing my songs and apologising.
‘But I kind of perform exaggerated versions of myself on other stages, be it print or on podcasts, in an often misguided attempt in fulfilling the kind of character role of the 21st century rockstar.
‘So it’s complicated, and this might be cheesy right, but sometimes playing pretend is the only way you can truly find out who you are.
‘And you can also probably say that men would rather do offensive impressions for attention than go to therapy.’
Matty and the Cruel Summer hitmaker were linked in May, and while they never officially confirmed the dating rumours the pair were pictured multiple times together over a few weeks.
But now it seems both parties have moved on, with Taylor supporting Travis Kelce at his American football games – attracting a whole load of new sports fans.
