Mass Effect 4 gets a spooky audio teaser for N7 Day

This year’s N7 Day brings a Steam sale, a crossover with The Sims, and one more teaser for the next Mass Effect game.

Only a couple weeks ago, BioWare shared an update on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, stating that it’s now in the alpha stages but stopped short of confirming a 2023 release.

That’s not the only major role-player the studio has in the pipeline either. The next Mass Effect (commonly referred to as Mass Effect 4) is also an indeterminate amount of time away from releasing.

Beyond the initial announcement, details on the next game have been slimmer than those for Dragon Age, though the team has provided another morsel of a teaser for fans to obsess over to celebrate N7 Day… if you can work out what it is.

As a quick reminder, N7 Day – November 7 – serves as a yearly celebration for the Mass Effect series. The name is based on the ‘N7’ logo from Commander Shepard’s armour in the game.

Apart from a new bit of artwork, of what seems to be a human-constructed mass relay, the big tease this year is the audio file you can find as a download at the end of the new BioWare blog page.

It doesn’t seem to be anything obvious on a first listen, but our bet is that it’s some sort of alien washing machine on its spin cycle. Either that or it’s a space monster threatening to do something evil.

EA and BioWare obviously hoping that fans will analyse the noises and come up with a theory as to what it really is – which we’re sure they will.

‘One day, when we’re ready, we’ll have more to share on the next Mass Effect, so thank you for being a part of this journey with us,’ reads the blog. ‘It’s exceptionally exciting for the team and we’d love to continue sharing glimpses of what we’re working on with you in the future.’

Aside from the teaser and usual gamut of merchandise to buy, there’ll also be a crossover with The Sims 4 that adds N7 Day themed cosmetics. These will be distributed for free later this month on November 17.

In addition, the Mass Effect Legendary Edition is on sale across Steam and the EA app. Until November 11, it’s more than half off at £20.49, so it’s the ideal time for any new fans to jump in and experience the original trilogy.
