Netflix’s chilling new thriller The Good Nurse, starring Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne, is based upon the terrifying true tale of one of America’s most prolific serial killers.
In the realm of true crime, there is no shortage of TV shows and films where we know that the main players have committed jaw-dropping acts of deceit, malice and murder. Take the hit docuseries I Am A Killer chronicling the stories of death row inmates or the new suspense thriller Devil In Ohio, which is inspired by a real-life satanic cult in small-town America.
There’s arguably nothing more unnerving, though, than the idea that evil is lurking in plain sight – and Netflix’s gripping new thriller The Good Nurse is about to make us second guess every well-meaning stranger that comes into our lives.

Based on the real life story of Charlie Cullen, one of America’s most prolific serial killers, the upcoming film gives us a window into the world of intensive nursing through the character of Amy (Jessica Chastain), a compassionate nurse and single mother struggling with a life-threatening heart condition.
Stretched to her physical and emotional limits by the demanding night shifts at the ICU, Amy is fast approaching her breaking point. But much-needed help arrives when Charlie (Eddie Redmayne), a thoughtful and empathetic fellow nurse, starts working at her unit.
While sharing long nights at the hospital, the two develop a strong and devoted friendship, and for the first time in years, Amy truly has faith in her and her young daughters’ future.
Oh, if only Charlie were a good nurse. Because contrary to the title of Netflix’s thriller, Charlie has anything but good intentions for his patients, and when a series of mysterious patient deaths sets off an investigation that points to Charlie as the prime suspect, Amy is forced to risk her life and the safety of her children to uncover the truth.
Although you might be pulling a grim smile at the name of Netflix’s thriller, Cullen actually did get away with fooling everyone that he was a good nurse for many years. We’re talking two decades, in fact, in which he systematically murdered patients through medication tampering before being apprehended.
Naturally, catching such a stealthy operator took a serious investigation; but Amy did play a significant role in catching Cullen in real life. The film is actually based on a book with the same title by Charles Graeber, which reveals how Amy Loughren, a co-worker and confidante of Cullen’s, became a confidential informant for detectives and helped cracked the case.
Although it’s not known for certain how many patients Cullen murdered during his nursing career, he confessed to killing 40 in New Jersey and Pennsylvania with drug cocktails he secretly administered. Investigators, however, believe he may have killed as many as 400. Cullen’s crimes earned him the nickname of the ‘Angel of Death’; now, he is currently serving 17 life sentences.
The film has a stellar team behind the camera, too. Academy Award nominee Tobias Lindholm (Another Round) serves as director, while Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan, The Whale) serves as producer.
The Good Nurse will be released on 26 October on Netflix.
