James Gunn reveals why Miley Cyrus was recast in Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Eagle-eyed Guardians of the Galaxy fans will have noticed that Miley Cyrus didn’t reprise her role in the franchise’s third instalment.

In Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the 30-year-old Flowers crooner voiced robot Mainframe in a post-credits scene, and while Mainframe returned for Guardians 3, Miley notably didn’t.

Instead, the character was played by Tara Strong, a decision director James Gunn has now explained.

Taking part in a Twitter Q&A earlier this month, James, 56, confirmed Tara played Mainframe as Miley was unable to.

On May 7, James told fans he’d be taking part in a Twitter Q&A but would only respond to questions he could answer with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

When one fan asked: ‘Was Miley Cyrus not able to reprise her role from Guardians 2? Was that the same character?’ the director replied, ‘Yes. Yes.’

James recently said Guardians of the Galaxy has been ‘all-encompassing’ for more than a decade of his life, describing finishing the trilogy as a ‘big relief’ after a gala screening of the third and final film.

The last instalment in the Marvel franchise sees the return of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, newlywed Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff and Vin Diesel – and recently hit UK cinemas.

Earlier this month, writer, director and new DC Studios co-chair and CEO James was accompanied by his cast at the European Gala Event, held at Disneyland Paris’s Marvel Avengers Campus.

Speaking at a press conference in Paris a day after the gala, James said: ‘Over the past 11 years of my life, I think I have probably spent 60% of my time thinking about the Guardians Of The Galaxy.

‘So this has taken up my entire life.

‘There is a weird situation where I just have to adjust everything about my world to be about something other than the Guardians, which is difficult.

‘But it’s frankly a big relief also, to feel like we’ve finished this trilogy, and we finished it in a way that we’re really proud of, where all the characters get the dignity they deserve.’
