As Miami Art Week 2023 descends upon Miami Beach, Samsung Galaxy is gearing up for its very own beachside extravaganza — a merging of art and technology through the cosmic eyes of multidisciplinary artist Eri Wakiyama. The New York-based contemporary artist has curated a collection of original artworks and hand-painted devices centered around Galaxy, Existentialism, and A Bright Future set to enrapture viewers in her celestial world-building. Entitled Let Me Know When You Land, Wakiyama’s art showcase will revisit peculiar, brooding characters, navigating themes of mortality during their planetary travels. The exhibition will debut hand-painted Samsung Galaxy devices and accessories, reinterpreted with Wakiyama’s iconic muses. The event will be held in Miami’s Little Haiti neighborhood at HUB Miami, an event and performance space located on 228 Northeast 59 Street.
A native of Fukuoka, Japan, Eri Wakiyama relocated to California’s Bay Area, later moving to New York City to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design. A distinctive artistic discipline emerged, later informed by bewitching design collaborations with luxury fashion houses Marc Jacobs, Comme des Garçons, Miu Miu, Calvin Klein, Supreme and ALYX. Her ghoulish girls are perched atop tree branches, either making a snack of a butterfly, taking eerie bubble baths in glowing woodland or walking runways where aesthetic sad girls reign. Across her academic and professional background, Wakiyama’s visual storytelling demonstrates a refined control of color, form and material — championing and illuminating the bounds of visual media.
Let Me Know When You Land is an immersive experience that will encourage viewers to interact with Wakiyama’s distinctive approach to abstract portraiture, widely regarded for its imperfect technicality and unbridled examination of physical transcendence. Hand-painted Samsung Galaxy devices, like Z Flip5, Buds2 Pro and S23 Ultra, will accompany a selection of artworks exploring the human condition and extensions of the body — technological or otherwise — that service human innovation and advancement.
Commissioned by Samsung Galaxy, Wakiyama’s original pieces traverse her characters’ emotional interiority — the fear of being lost in orbit, having drifted too far from home — and their acceptance and conquering of the intangible. Throughout this galactic dreamscape, poetic longings, Milky Way-bound excursions and fluorescent space bikes shuttle girlhoods and childlike wonder to and from. With Samsung Galaxy devices serving as ritualistic canvases, the exhibition invites art enthusiasts to travel alongside Wakiyama, embracing uncharted and otherworldly realms of expression through her visual art.
HUB Miami is conveniently located close to Wynwood and the Design District, providing attendees an opportunity to participate in the city’s ongoing gallery showings and activations. The art exhibition will kick off with an opening reception on December 8 and will run until December 9.
