Carmelo Zappulla‘s External Reference Architecture Studio has just unveiled its latest project, which evokes relaxation in a late ’60s apartment. Dubbed “The Penthouse by WOW,” the home has been transformed into a contemporary restaurant in the center of Madrid.
Located on the city’s Gran Vía, the restaurant inhabits the fifth and sixth floors of the dated Hotel Roma and transforms them into an elite gastronomic experience. The design is inspired by the hotel owner, who lived in the penthouse for over 50 years.
Traditional diner elements are reflected throughout the space, featuring curved carpet and wooden flooring, vintage furniture, and contemporary lighting fixtures. Architectural bookshelves line the perimeter, while retro-futuristic touches envelop every room.
The look and feel of a traditional home has been maintained, creating a residential illusion. While the upper floor allows guests to enjoy a terrace experience with vast views of Madrid’s Gran Vía, the lower level offers several rooms for a unique affair. Customers are welcome to drink at the vintage restaurant bar, while food can be savored inside a library or an old recording studio.
