Between 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons with Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer and 1999’s Cruel Intentions starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Reese Witherspoon, we’ve all probably already seen at least one big screen interpretation of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 1782 novel “Les Liaisons Dangereuses.” Though that may be true, Starz‘s newest TV show out on Nov 6, similarly titled Dangerous Liaisons, promises a spin on the classic 18th Century revolutionary novel.
Starring Australian actors Alice Englert and Nicholas Denton, the new show will serve as a prelude to the previous feature films. “It is the prelude of the origin story of these two characters of Camille and Valmont,” Denton tells SheKnows’ Reshma Gopaldas. “Who end up being one of the most iconic f**k people of France,” Englert completes.
Asking them to put the show in their own words, Denton says, “It’s about the rise of a woman in the oppressive nature of the patriarchy and 18th century.” The Aussie actor also notes the show’s “sexy” and “cool” while Englert adds “caustic” to the many descriptors.
We decided to put them to the test to learn how well they know each other and – spoiler alert – they actually did pretty well.
“Is it April? March? June? I don’t know that one,” Denton said in his first answer asking Englert’s birthday, before she reveals he was way off (her birthday’s on Aug 5th). Englert confesses that the internet lists her birthday incorrectly. Denton continues the rough start guessing she was born in New Zealand when she’s actually from Sydney, Australia. Close enough.
Things then began to turn around for Denton. Not only does he get one of her favorite shows right (BoJack Horseman), he also answers her favorite food (noodles) and favorite artist (Nick Cave). “He’s got noodles and Nick Cave right and I feel like to be honest those are true parts of me,” Englert says of her co-star’s impressive results.
When asked what Englert’s go-to dance move is, Denton goes above and beyond, and performs her signature move: a high kick. “Alice is a fantastic dancer and I have seen her dance many a time,” he says.
When the pressure is put on Englert, she rises to the occasion, then quickly fails to guess Denton’s birthday. He tells her, “I just said it!” They learn that the internet lists Denton’s age as 78 years old, and Denton quips that it’s correct, “I’m actually dead on Facebook.” Englert guesses Denton’s favorite food is the same as hers, noodles! Denton exclaims, “They call me Nicky Noodle. Love noodles… changed my life.” Send noodles, not flowers to this cast.
The best part then comes when Englert gets up to show Denton’s go-to dance move, and let’s just say his hips probably don’t lie. If they were ever to dance together, things would get pretty dodgy they reveal. “She kicks me in the pelvis and I just fly away, and then I’ve broken myself in half.” Ahh, dangerous. Now we know why these two are starring in Dangerous Liaisons. While they’ll keep you laughing off-screen, their volatile love-hate on-screen chemistry will keep you hooked to Starz’s newest drama, which has already been renewed for a second season. Watch the exclusive video to see their dangerous dance moves, infectious chemistry, and learn how many lies the internet is telling about them.
Dangerous Liaisons premieres November 6 on Starz at 8pm EST.
