Taylor Swift fans were convinced they had unearthed the real reason the songstress split form her actor boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
Swifties – as her loyal supporters are known – believed the 33-year-old singer had been leaving clues throughout her Eras tour that pointed as to why she called it quits with her beau of six years.
News of the couple’s potential split broke over the weekend with a source close to the pair claiming they were over.
The insider told ET: ‘It was not dramatic.
‘The relationship had just run its course’.
Ahead of the breakup rumours, the Anti-Hero singer changed up her touring setlist this week but Champagne Problems remained part of the heartfelt roster of hits.
Telling a story fans were convinced was a nod to her own romantic situation, the lyrics share an idea of two people attempting to overcome a failed proposal after the groom already informed his family who was celebrating with bottles of champagne.
Taylor famously wrote the song with her lover Joe, 32 – who co-wrote a number of the star’s other tracks including Betty and Sweet Nothing all under the alias of William Bowery.
During one of her performances last week, the pop star made a last minute change by adding the tune to her list and was filmed appearing emotional as she sang the words.
Following the circulation of the performance online, fans have convinced themselves the reason for the split may be hidden in the lyrics.
One of the verses’ lyrics reads: ‘She would’ve made such a lovely bride: “What a shame she’s f**ked in the head”, they said, But you’ll find the real thing instead, She’ll patch up your tapestry that I shred’.
Social media users shared their theories on what the words could mean with one saying: ‘Will Joe and Taylor break up because Joe really wanted to Marry her and Taylor didn’t, that’s why she cried in champagne problems at the time of “I never was ready so I watch you go” [sic]’.
Another penned: ‘They are saying champagne problems is about Joe.. I’m this close to losing it [sic]’.
‘What if champagne problems really was about her and Joe?? and so then midnight rain prob was about him too [sic],’ was an account’s response to the speculation.
