We have our first look at Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in Wicked – and we’re already in love.
Pop star Ariana, 29, and West End icon Cynthia, 36, will star alongside one another in the big-screen adaptation of the musical Wicked.
The former Nickelodeon star will be taking on the role of Glinda, while Cynthia is playing Elphaba.
In first-look images, we see Ariana in full costume and if these shots are anything to go by, we’re in for a true spectacle.
Sharing the snaps to Instagram, Ariana and Cynthia gave their followers a teaser of what’s to come, posing without captions because, well, the pics really do all the talking in this instance.
As Glinda, Ariana can be seen wearing a gorgeous, puffy pink dress as she climbs up a staircase.
The shots are pretty dark and details are hard to make out, but Ariana’s long blonde locks have been swept up into a ponytail, and she seems to be venturing with caution.
Meanwhile, Cynthia’s image shows her as we’ve never seen her before, broomstick in hand, fully covered in green paint and, of course, wearing her pointed hat.
The snaps really are a sight to behold, and fans could barely contain their excitement in the comments.
‘YES!!!!! 🔥❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️’, wrote Bridgerton star Simone Ashley.
‘Unreal’, declared Rachel Zegler, while Normani squealed: ‘OMG OMG OMG OMGGGGG’.
‘My body is ready!!!!!!!’, wrote one fan.
Another praised: ‘you look absolutely magical, you were born to play glinda’.
Written as a prequel to The Wizard of Oz, Wicked tells the story of how Elphaba became the Wicked Witch of the West, with the original production having hit Broadway in 2003, starring Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristen Chenoweth as Glinda.
The movie version, meanwhile, has been in the works for years but has faced obstacles, including director Stephen Daldry departing.
But filming is now more than underway, as Ariana recently revealed that the cast – also starring Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible – and crew had hit the halfway mark.
Marking the milestone on Instagram, the Dangerous Woman hitmaker said she was ‘savouring every millisecond’ of the journey, praising her character Glinda for showing her ‘so many new things every day.’
She added that she was struggling for words due to being ‘so grateful’, hailing co-star Cynthia her ‘brilliant twin flame’ and ‘sister’.
Bagging herself a lead role in 2021, Ariana has made no secret of her love for the musical in the past, having covered songs from the soundtrack on several occasions, including a performance of The Wizard and I at the 15th anniversary of the show in 2018.
The chart-topper also featured on Mika’s Popular Song, a track which heavily samples and remixes Glinda’s iconic song Popular.
Wicked’s release date is currently slated for November 2024.
