In the role he called a "dream come true," Chris Evans lends his velvety, Bostonian-lite voice to the role of Buzz Lightyear for Pixar's newest feel-good (but also cry your eyes out) flick, Lightyear. A teaser trailer dropped today, giving fans a chance to hear that voice utter "to infinity" and not much else — we know how the rest of it goes.
Lightyear takes place within the Pixar universe, but in a time before Toy Story, offering the backstory for Buzz Lightyear — more specifically, the human astronaut who inspired the Tim Allen-voiced toy. And while fans may have mixed feelings about whether or not it's something that we need to see, there is one fact that's clear no matter what part of the galaxy you're from: Buzz could have been hot. Instead, Disney offered us the broad-chinned Buzz that we're all familiar with.
The opportunity was there from the beginning. Chris Evans is … Chris Evans. TikToks from infinity and beyond document the absolute chokehold that he has on the world of thirst traps — just search for "Christopher Jamal Evans" and you'll see there's no shortage of people who'd very much appreciate a hot (Bearded? Is that too too much?) Buzz Lightyear.
With that as inspiration, Disney could have done what they managed to achieve with another undeniably fiery character: the dad from Inside Out, Bill Andersen, aka Riley's dad, aka "the hot dad from Inside Out." Whether they set out to do it or not, that particular mustachioed side character is now an icon of animated attractiveness. Disney had the chance to recapture that magic and instead gave us the same eggplant emoji-shaped Buzz face with strong eyebrows and the dulcet baritone of Captain America.
"Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can't believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else," Evans said of the movie, according to People. "Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day."
I pinch myself every day knowing that Chris Evans is out there with his peekaboo chest tattoos and political platform that's out to save the world, but doing nothing to help us get another addition to the hot Disney dude pantheon. It wasn't too much to ask for Disney to give us another hot Robin Hood fox. Another Kocoum. Another King Triton. With a premiere date of June 17, 2022, it's probably too late for a completely new character design, but just know that pictures like these were undoubtedly ignored during the process of bringing Buzz to life.
