Strictly Come Dancing: Eddie chats to Claudia Winkleman
I know what you’re thinking: week 5 and not a flicker of the Strictly curse!
We fans are used to a throbbing undercurrent of barely concealed passion coursing between celebrity and professional by now.
The naked terror of week one has abated leaving the couples with an uncontrollable desire to . . . couple.
I know the signs. I have admitted to falling head over heels for burning hunk of love James Jordan.
For at least forty-eight hours I was a palpitating maelstrom of ramped-up hormones every time he took me ‘in hold’ for the Viennese waltz.

Then his stunning wife Ola Jordan popped in to rehearsals and I snapped back into sensible mode. But in 2013 the curse was seemingly rampant.
Rachel Riley left her husband and, much later on, ultimately married professional Pasha Kovalev. They now have two gorgeous daughters.
Former Rugby player Ben Cohen left his wife and later became official with his professional partner Kristina Rihanoff. They have a daughter.
Behind-the-scenes gossip at the time hinted at even more crushes, canoodles and illicit skirmishes I’ll be sued if I mention.

In comparison, Strictly 2023 is positively monastic. Could it be that the casting team has expelled all the frisky dancers and paired the most flirtatious celebrities with happily monogamous professionals? Are there bromides in the water?
Ebullient Eddie Kadi brought enthusiasm and a charming temperament to the show but even under the experienced tutelage of Karen Hauer was never quite able to translate enjoyment into elegant execution.
The dance-off left no one in doubt. It was exit time for Eddie.
Zara McDermott, ex-Love Island, now billed as a documentary maker and budding BBC star, isn’t going anywhere if the judges can help it.
She’s doing exactly what Strictly is all about – going on a graceful and captivating journey.
We all love a novice improving pleasingly every Saturday night and, in the arms of Graziano, Zara’s delivering.
Amanda Abbington was hors de combat, with the rumour mill working overtime suggesting she’s been beset by depression.
Meanwhile, Annabel Croft delivered a feather boa-waving Charleston, Angela Scanlon’s competent American smooth was dismissed by Craig Revel Horwood with the damning ‘I don’t think this is your best dance’ and Krishnan Guru-Murthy moved so speedily he looked poised to take flight.
Knocking our proverbial socks off were Nigel Harman with a stunningly sensual foxtrot, Ellie Leach who brought such passion to the paso that those of us who merely endure it could suddenly see why it is so beloved and Layton Williams with an amusing and interpretative sunny salsa.
Bobby Brazier dances with such fluidity he resembles a flowing fountain. He is destined for close proximity to the glitter ball.
Adam Thomas is a natural communicator with a gift for telling a terpsichorean story.
I, however, still think the smart money is on glorious, gorgeous Angela Rippon. Her Argentine tango, complete with eye-watering high kicks was so sublime I simply wrote ‘BLOODY HELL!’ in my notebook. What a woman!
