Queen’s warning ‘look’ isn’t elitist or aloof – ‘it’s a defence mechanism’, says expert

For most of us, the closest we’ll get to the Queen is a quick glimpse on TV or from afar at a public event.

But for world leaders and famous folk, handshakes and conversation is on the cards – how exciting!

There’s plenty of royal rules to follow when you meet the monarch, from bowing and curtseying to saying ‘ma’am’ like ‘ham’ and never showing her your back.

But what if you do something wrong? On the odd occasion, Her Majesty has shown her famous disapproving ‘look’ – but it’s not what you think.

Robert Hardman, author of Queen of our Times: The Life of Elizabeth II tells OK!: “Former Prime Minister Tony Blair said that you don’t want to overstep the line and get the look!

“Over the years people have said that it’s arrogant behaviour and elitist or aloof. But actually it’s a defence mechanism. I call it the royal paradox.”

Robert says that we want the Royal Family to be just like us – but you can’t get too close. Our Queen is a monarch, not a friend. That’s why she might show you ‘the look’.

He explains: “People want her to be friendly and affable, like their favourite granny. But at the same time, they’re talking to a monarch.

“At some point the people who work for her or around her retire, but she doesn’t. The royals have acquaintances, such as Prime Ministers, and they all get on perfectly well. But you can’t get too close to these people because they’re going to move on.”

While the Queen won’t offer her true opinion in public, she’s had plenty of drama to tackle in the last 12 months.

Anxiety is rising behind palace walls as Prince Harry’s memoir gets set for release.
