Queen to ‘host Kate Middleton and Prince William’s 40th birthday party’ this summer

The Queen is said to be hosting a lavish birthday bash for Kate Middleton and Prince William as the royal couple celebrate turning 40 within six months of each other.

The Duchess of Cambridge turned 40 at the beginning of the year, while the Duke celebrates his birthday today, Tuesday 21 June.

Kate’s thought to have held “scaled back” birthday celebrations back in January, but will now “celebrate in style” with her husband as Her Majesty The Queen, 96, will allow the pair to have a party at either Windsor Castle or at Sandringham.

As well as senior royals like Prince Charles and Camilla, the Queen may be in attendance for their pair’s birthday bash, in line with the royal tradition of celebrating birthday milestones for senior members of the family.

She isn’t expected to confirm her attendance until the day, however, in the wake of her ongoing mobility issues that saw her drop out of a handful of Platinum Jubilee festivities, a source told Mirror Online.

This won’t be the first big birthday bash the Queen has hosted – the 96 year old monarch has previously greenlit parties for William's 18th birthday, Prince Andrew’s 40th, Princess Anne’s 50th, and Princess Margaret’s 70th.

In a royal first, the Duke of Cambridge will reportedly not have his birthday marked by the flying of Union flags on government buildings – a tradition which usually occurs on senior royals’ birthdays.

It’s believed that this has now changed as a result of Prince Andrew’s banishment from royal duties.

As per the Mirror, flags will now only be raised for the Queen’s birthday and Prince Charles’ despite Prince William being third in line for the throne.

Ahead of the 40 year old Royal one day taking the throne, his plans on “reshaping the monarchy” have been shared.

One thing he’s expected to change is how open the Royal Family is with the general public, following the Queen’s so-called “never complain, never explain” mantra.

“People are simply not going to be happy with silence any more. The Queen's approach has worked very well for her during a more deferential age, with different forms of communication.

“But what William is working out is how to take the best of what his grandmother has done and make it relevant today,” says one former royal adviser to Daily Mail.

They went on: “And he believes the monarchy needs to better explain its own thinking, particularly in terms of its place in the world.”
