Meghan Markle, 40, and Prince Harry, 36, made headlines when they announced they’d be stepping down from their roles in the British Royal Family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have since forged a new life in Montecito, California, but have come under criticism in recent months, which has been branded “harsh” by Channel 5 presenter Jeremy Vine.

The 56-year-old remarked that the couple are a “divisive subject” between panellists and viewers, whenever their latest move is analysed on The Jeremy Vine Show.

Within 18 months of leaving the UK, the couple had secured a deal with Netflix, launched a podcast and Meghan had written a children’s book.

According to a recent survey conducted by YouGov, Meghan and Harry’s popularity has nosedived among Britons following their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

It was also suggested that the Sussexes’ response to the Afghanistan crisis is responsible for the drop.

BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy has addressed the royal couple and admitted he has always been a “massive fan” of Meghan.

“[Harry and Meghan are a] very divisive subject,” Jeremy commented.

“I was always a massive fan of Meghan but some of the stuff recently has been trying for even her most ardent supporters.”

He continued: “What I noticed is that if you mention Meghan and Harry the room just splits straightaway. It really does.”

Despite this, Jeremy believes remarks about Meghan have been “too harsh”, but was less sympathetic towards Harry.

He claimed that the couple are on a “tough road” as he also touched on Meghan’s critics.

“I don’t like some of the commentary on Meghan,” he mused. “I think it’s just too harsh on her.”

Jeremy added: “I think Harry brings it on himself sometimes.”

The Duke has been candid in recent months about his experiences as a working royal, sharing insights into his childhood and his relationship with his father Prince Charles, in his Apple TV+ series in Me You Can’t See.

During a podcast with Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard in May, Harry compared royal life to film The Truman Show and being in a zoo.

The Duke has also opened up on The Late Late Show in an interview with James Corden, as well as his landmark Oprah chat with wife Meghan earlier this year.

The Channel 5 broadcaster added that he hopes the couple do find their way and wished them well.

Jeremy remarked: “I think they are obviously finding their way. I wish them well with it.”

“It’s a tough road for them,” he finished.

Meanwhile, Jeremy has released his new book following his landmark BBC Radio 2 series that asks the question, “What Makes Us Human?”
