Jay Blades, 52, has insisted that King Charles III is still the “same person” he met back when he was a Prince, despite the royal’s dramatic title change, while speaking to Express.co.uk at the 2022 Pride of Britain Awards. The Repair Shop star also went on to praise the monarch as he spoke about the shared passion that brought them together.

When asked what it was like seeing King Charles take to the throne after having met him as a Prince, Jay revealed that he didn’t feel much had changed.

“No, he’s the same person,” Jay reflected. “He’s just got a different job title, and probably more responsibility.”

The Repair Shop star then went on to describe what it had been like to spend time with the King as part of the BBC’s centenary celebrations.

“But I think meeting him… When you see this episode that goes out, it is unbelievable.

“We had a really great time, because we both have the same interests,” he continued.

“We want heritage craft to just flourish, so that’s what we were chatting about, really.”

As part of celebrating 100 years of the BBC, Jay was visited by King Charles at the Repair Shop before his accession to the throne, after initially turning him down due to his busy schedule.

Last night, viewers tuned in to watch the special episode, where Jay and his team were tasked with restoring two items the monarch had selected.

The King’s items included an 18th-century bracket clock from the collection at The Prince’s Foundation’s Dumfries House headquarters, and a piece of Wemyss Ware made for Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee.

Fans observed how relaxed Jay seemed to be around the royal and that the pair were able to exchange banter.

The BBC favourite admitted that he wasn’t actually nervous to catch up with the then-Prince and that he had decided to treat him as a normal person.

“I viewed him as anyone else who walked into the barn. It’s not an arrogance, I just feel like everyone is the same,” Jay told his fans.

“He is just a normal person and his love for craft is unbelievable,” he added.

Speaking about their jokes together, he said: “I am a cheeky chappy, but I didn’t show no disrespect to him, it was all banter.”

The BBC star also told fans how he had found the King to be a “funny, down to earth guy”.

Jay previously met the royal when he received his MBE at Windsor Castle earlier this year.

The furniture restorer and designer was given the honour by the monarch when he was the Prince of Wales back in May.

Jay was given the MBE for services to craft, and in recognition of his work promoting heritage craft and restoration in the UK.

The Repair Shop began airing in 2017, with Jay quickly becoming popular with the public.

The Daily Mirror Pride of Britain Awards air tonight at 8pm.
