Liz Truss, 47, beat Rishi Sunak, 42, in the race to become Boris Johnson’s successor in today’s result, in which she won 57 per cent victory over her rival Rishi Sunak’s 43 per cent. From Tuesday, she will take over Mr Johnson’s role as the Conservative party leader and Prime Minister and has vowed to put her all into solving the current living cost crisis.

Today’s result has prompted many to share their opinions online, including the outspoken actor John Cleese.

Taking to his Twitter page today, the 82-year-old shared a savage response about Liz’s “honour” to be the country’s next leader.

He wrote: “Liz Truss says that it’s an honour to be elected leader of the Conservative party. No it isn’t.”

In another tweet, he commented: “I had always hoped Boris would lead the Tories into a debacle at the next election, but the last couple of weeks have reassured me that Truss will do the job very nicely.”

Many of John’s 5.7 million flocked to his post to share their thoughts.

Mike Jones wrote: “I get what you are saying but we’d better hope she surprises us… we need some real leadership, now.”

Sally Atkinson added: “Perfectly put, she’s the best last relay team member after [David] Cameron, [Theresa] May and Johnson!”

Stuart H commented: “Could have done with you writing her speech!”

It isn’t the first time the Monty Python star has hit out about Liz in recent weeks.

The actor responded to a tweet by journalist Matthew Stadlen, who wrote: “Has anyone wanted to be Prime Minister more than Liz Truss?

“She can’t disguise her utter desperation for the top job even though she’s wildly unsuited to high office.”

John responded: “I think that Truss makes Hilary Clinton look quite irresistible.”(sic)
