While being a part of a religious community can be a comforting experience, for Hailey Bieber, this has not always been the case. At one point in her life, Hailey happened to be in a church that she felt did not support her during her breakup with Justin Bieber. Looking back, Hailey recalls feeling “very outcast.”
Hailey Bieber and Justin Bieber became close because of their faith
Hailey and Justin first met in 2009 when Justin appeared on the Today show and Hailey—who was a fan of his—got to meet him.
The two of them later became friends as adults. Hailey and Justin ran in the same celebrity circle that includes the Kardashian-Jenners, and they were also members of the famous Hillsong church. According to WSJ, they dated briefly and broke up in 2016.
Hailey and Justin met again in 2018 after they met again at a Vous Church conference in Miami. This came after Justin ended his on-and-off relationship with Selena Gomez for good. Hailey and Justin got engaged less than a month after reconnecting, and they tied the knot later that year.
Hailey Bieber felt ‘very outcast’ by her church after a breakup with Justin Bieber
Speaking to WSJ, Hailey admitted that she did not feel comfortable opening up to some people in her church community after her and Justin’s breakup in 2016.
“There were a lot of people in the church world that made me feel very outcast,” she said. “When did church become a social club? That was such a bad feeling.”
This would not be the only time Hailey experienced some judgments from people in her religious community. For example, in a YouTube video from 2021, Hailey shared, “I’ve met Christian people that are just super judgmental and made me feel like I’m a bad person because I don’t live my life the way they think I should live my life.”
Hailey Bieber and Justin Bieber’s faith helps keep them together
Hailey has not let negativity affect her faith, however. She and Justin are still as devoted as ever, and the couple actually credits their faith to helping them keep their relationship strong.
She explained in her YouTube video, “They ask me all the time, ‘What would you say is the biggest thing in your relationship? You guys are really happy.’ And I’m like, ‘It’s our faith.’ It’s what we believe in. If we didn’t have that, we wouldn’t even be here. We wouldn’t even be together.”
This is a similar sentiment to the one Hailey shared with Elle back in 2020: “Being able to share that with each other—to have that bond of faith and spirituality—is so [critical] for us. It’s the most important part of our relationship, following Jesus together, being a part of the church community together. It’s everything.”
