As she showed off her award, the Great British baking and cooking queen revealed: “We’re going home for a sandwich and the children are coming tonight.” Mary, 86, received the honour – which also recognises her charity work – from the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. The former Bake Off judge, who was joined by husband Paul Hunnings, said: “I’m extremely proud and honoured, I just wish my parents were here.”
Dame Mary, who has written more than 50 cookbooks, added: “My aim is to pass on the skill that I love so much because everybody has to cook each day…you’ve got to feed yourself so why not learn to do it well and enjoy it?”
Prince Charles also knighted Philip May – husband of former PM Theresa – for his political service.
Sir Philip, 64, said it was a pleasant “surprise” but Mrs May said: “It’s recognition of the huge support and effort the other-halves of all MPs put in.”
Former prime minister Theresa May has said the knighthood awarded to her husband Sir Philip May is recognition of the work of all partners of Members of Parliament.
Sir Philip, 64, was dubbed a knight for political service which he called “a pleasant surprise”.
He added: “I’m very proud and very honoured, I’m just sorry neither of my parents are alive to see it. I’m delighted really and it all came as something of a surprise but a pleasant one nevertheless.
“I left the politics very firmly to my wife – I always tried to help in the political campaigning and on the doorsteps.”
Mrs May said: “I’m so pleased for Philip but I’m also pleased because it’s recognition of the huge support and effort the other halves of all MPs put in.
“It’s unrecognised and people don’t see that except at constituency functions and things like that, but what people don’t realise is that support is hugely important to us all.”
